Nick Sink, a 6-6, 240-pound tight end and defensive lineman at Forsyth Country Day, pounced on his first college scholarship offer and committed to Duke on Wednesday night.
The Blue Devils also picked up a commitment this week from Jordan Ondijo, a 6-5, 220-pound defensive end from Waller, Texas.
Sink, who has 26 catches for 426 yards and four touchdowns this season, said that Coach David Cutcliffe of Duke called him Tuesday night and offered a scholarship. After mulling over the decision through the day Wednesday, he called Cutcliffe back and committed. Sink becomes the 10th player from North Carolina in the Blue Devils' 2010 recruiting class.
"I have always been a Duke fan, and I always wanted to go there and play a sport," Sink said. "And this was my chance so I decided to take it."
Sink said that Duke originally recruited him as a defensive lineman but that Cutcliffe told him he could play on the defensive line or at tight end. Sink is also a skilled long-snapper.
"He could end up anywhere," Coach Mark Moroz of FCD said. "He has size, he has speed, he has great hands. he could play anywhere from slot receiver to defensive tackle, and he could easily gain 30 pounds and play interior line or he could stay where he is, get faster and play on the end. Duke got a great player."
Sink said he has attended two Duke games this season and that he is excited about the academics.
"With how successful their business school is, that's a big thing," Sink said.
Moroz said he was proud of Sink and his family for the way they handled the process.
"We talked last year, and I told him the plan we wanted to take to get him recruited," Moroz said. "I am thankful they trusted me and let me kind of handle the recruiting part of it. I am thankful it worked out. He has a full ride, and that's what every kid dreams of."
