WFU, Virginia women play to tie

No. 5 Wake Forest and Virginia played to a double overtime, scoreless tie yesterday at Spry Stadium in the final regular-season women's socccer match for the Deacons.

The Deacons (12-3-2, 4-2-2) honored its seven-member senior class in a ceremony before the match. Caitlin Farrell, Kaley Fountain, Bess Harrington, Jill Hutchinson, Laura Morse, Allie Sadow and Sarah Winslow each received a start in their final regular season match at Spry Stadium.

The match was a physical one. Virginia (7-5-4, 2-4-2) was called for 20 fouls, Wake Forest for 14.

Wake Forest had a 12-9 advantage in shots, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Each team attempted six corner kicks in the match.

Amanda Barasha earned her sixth shutout in goal for Wake Forest. Barasha made two saves.

Hutchinson attempted a team-high four shots for Wake Forest. Ally Berry had three shots, including two shots that were on goal.

For UVa., Sinead Farrelly took three shots, while Lauren Alwine had two.

Wake Forest closes out the regular season next week with two road games. The Deacs travel to Maryland on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game, before finishing the regular season next Sunday against Boston College for a 1 p.m. match.
