Penguins 3, Panthers 2 (SO): Sidney Crosby scored twice in the third period and had the only goal in the shootout, and Pittsburgh overcame a two-goal deficit to win its seventh straight game, beating visiting Florida last night.
Crosby had a power-play goal and a short-handed score in regulation, then beat Tomas Vokoun with a nifty deke to help the Penguins improve to an NHL-best 9-1-0.
Steven Reinprecht scored twice in the first period for Florida. The Panthers have lost six of seven to drop to 2-5-1.
In the shootout, Crosby moved in slowly on Vokoun and made three moves to his forehand before finally tucking the puck into the net as Vokoun dove to his left.
Crosby tied the game with 3:19 to play with his short-handed goal, one-timing a feed from Evgeni Malkin with a shot that appeared to deflect off a Florida player. The short-handed goal was the first in the NHL for Crosby.
Crosby's first goal came a second after a 5-on-3 power play had expired 2:14 into the third after a diving effort to keep in the puck in the zone by Malkin. Malkin swatted the puck to Alex Goligoski, who fed an open Crosby in the right-wing circle.
Blues 3, Wild 1: David Perron had a goal and an assist for his first points of the season after getting shifted to the checking line, helping St. Louis shake off slow-starting woes to beat visiting Minnesota last night.
The checking line produced the first two goals for St. Louis, which won for the first time at home after two losses. Jay McClement scored in the opening minute on a rebound.
Chuck Kobasew had a second-period goal for the Wild, which has lost seven straight on the road — four shy of the franchise record. Minnesota has been outscored 25-12 during the slump.
The Blues opened the season with two come-from-behind victories against Detroit in Sweden before losing two straight at home, and needed strong defense and 20 saves from Chris Mason to hang on at the finish.
St. Louis got no shots the first 15:35 of the third, but held Minnesota to only four chances in the third period.
