Prep-Football Roundup - First Edition: Mount Airy, Ledford both rally to victory

Mount Airy 31, Bishop McGuinness 14: Andy Temoney rushed for 130 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown to help Mount Airy stay undefeated with a Northwest 2-A/1-A win over visiting Bishop McGuinness last night.

Justin Collier started the scoring for the Bears (9-0, 5-0) with an 18-yard reception from Ben Hinson. Luke Wheeler rushed for the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

The Villains (7-2, 3-2) came back with a 4-yard run by quarterback Josh Rathburn in the first quarter, then took a 14-8 lead in the second quarter on a 92-yard pass from Rathburn to Marty DeFrancesco.

Wheeler caught a 15-yard pass from Hinson to take the lead back for Mount Airy, and Hinson scored on a 7-yard run with just eight seconds left in the half for a 22-14 lead.

Temoney's 1-yard run was the only score of the third quarter, and Tyler Hull tacked on a 25-yard field goal to finish the scoring.

Hinson finished 9 of 13 passing for 141 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed seven times for 45 yards and a score. Wheeler ran for 50 yards on eight carries.

Rathburn completed five of nine passes, all to DeFrancesco, for 206 yards and a touchdown for Bishop McGuinness.

Ledford 21, Asheboro 13: Jonathan Shelton led visiting Ledford with 96 total offensive yards and three touchdowns as it rallied in the second half for a Mid-Piedmont 3-A win over Asheboro last night.

Asheboro scored in the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Burr from Caleb Mason and a 15-yard run by Dimitri Faglier (139 yards on 28 carries).

The game shifted in the second half with two touchdowns by Shelton in the third quarter, the first on a 4-yard run and the second on a 39-yard pass from Steven Fuquay. Ledford's final touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard run by Shelton.

Elkin 32, Alleghany 0: Tre Hayes ran for two touchdowns, Jermaine Hayes scored on a 99-yard kickoff return, and Elkin blanked visiting Alleghany in a Mountain-Valley 2-A/1-A game last night.

Aaron Rabin (12 carries for 53 yards) got the scoring started with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Tre Hayes (eight carries for 124 yards) added to the Elks' lead with a 72-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Elkin continued to pull away when Jermaine Hayes took the opening second-half kickoff all the way to pad the lead to 20-0. Grayson Kimrey (seven carries for 51 yards) had a 26-yard touchdown run later in the quarter. Tre Hayes then wrapped up the scoring with his second touchdown run, this one of 36 yards.

Starmount 68, North Wilkes 6: Starmount stormed to a 41-point lead after the first quarter and rolled to a Mountain-Valley 2-A/1-A win last night in Hays.

Starmount used a balanced attack to rush for 442 yards. Israel Murphy led the Rams with 89 yards and three touchdowns on six carries, followed by Fondae McDaniel with 88 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. Jake Barr and Bobby Gray rushed for two touchdowns each, and M.J. Bryant added a 68-yard touchdown run for Starmount.

FCD 37, Charlotte AFC Rangers 14: Forsyth Country Day's defense scored a safety and three touchdowns to spark a win over the visiting AFC Rangers of Charlotte last night.

FCD's Ben Coles recorded a safety and returned an interception for a touchdown, Peter Bambalis also scored a touchdown on an interception return, and Jay Baughan wrapped up the scoring for the Furies with a 50-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Furies' offense contributed early. Nick Sink caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Luke Johnson in the first quarter. Seth Constable added a second-quarter touchdown on a 13-yard run.

Johnson completed 6 of 9 passes for 66 yards, and Constable rushed for 53 yards on 12 carries. Coles led FCD with seven tackles (five solo) and had two fumble recoveries.

Carver 23, Atkins 0: A relentless pass rush set the tone in Carver's decisive win over rival Atkins in a PAC 6 2-A game last night at Lash Stadium.

The Yellowjackets kept constant pressure on quarterback Cedric Williams and recorded eight sacks, including three each from Anthony Avery and Jarvis Jones.
