Postcards Home - Cline developing into top receiver for Mountaineers

»  Comments | Post a Comment

■ Receiver Matt Cline (Glenn '06) has become one of Armanti Edwards' favorite targets in Appalachian State's powerful passing game. Cline leads the team with 29 catches and is averaging 11.1 yards a catch.

Cline had three catches for 41 yards in Saturday's come-from-behind 44-34 win over Wofford. Perhaps the biggest was a 14-yarder that put the ball on the Wofford 3-yard line with three seconds left in the first half. Edwards rushed for a touchdown on the next play as time expired, and the Mountaineers trimmed their deficit to 27-20 at halftime.

Cline, a junior, also has four carries for 45 yards and a touchdown this season.

Cornerback Ed Gainey (Mount Tabor '08) had two tackles against Wofford to run his season total to 23. He leads the team in passes broken up (five) and passes defended (seven) and is tied for the lead with two interceptions.

■ Receiver Andrew Bodenheimer (West Forsyth '08) made the first catch of his East Carolina football career Saturday in a 49-13 win over Rice. Bodenheimer, a redshirt freshman, caught a deep out pass from Josh Jordan for a 31-yard gain that put the ball at the Rice 2-yard line and set up a touchdown run.

■ Winston-Salem's Kayla Duncan (Statesville Christian '08) is having a solid sophomore season for the TCU women's tennis team. She reached the semifinals in singles Monday at the Wilson/ITA Texas Regional Championship in Waco, before losing to nationally ranked Nina Secerbegovic of Baylor.

Duncan, who started her high-school career at Reynolds, has defeated five nationally ranked players in the fall season and has a singles record of 12-4. All of her losses have been to ranked opponents.

She will return to North Carolina for the Kitty Harrison Invitational, scheduled Nov. 6-8 in Chapel Hill.

Julianna Prim (Starmount '09) set one individual school record and helped Pfeiffer set a relay record in its swimming season opener Saturday at Milligan.

Prim broke the record in the mile with a time of 18:12.73 and was four minutes faster than her Milligan opponent. She also helped the Falcons set a 200 medley-relay record with a time of 2:08.90, topping Milligan by 14 seconds.

Erica Creed (NW Guilford '07) carded her third consecutive round of 74 to tie for 11th and lead the UNC Greensboro women's golf team to sixth place at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate Tuesday at Greenville Country Club's Classic Course.
