NFL Notebook: Panthers waive Burton; 'Skins to start Campbell

■ Panthers: Carolina has waived defensive tackle Antwon Burton, creating a roster spot for Tank Tyler, a newly acquired defensive tackle. The Panthers sent their 2010 fifth-round pick to Kansas City late Monday for Tyler, who is expected to split time with Hollis Thomas at nose tackle.

Burton was let go yesterday, a month after Carolina signed him to create depth. He played sparingly with Carolina.

The Panthers also signed Rashaad Duncan, an undrafted rookie defensive tackle, to the practice squad and released Terrance Taylor, who was signed last week. Duncan was cut from Tampa Bay's practice squad last week.

■ Redskins: Jason Campbell will remain Washington's starting quarterback for Monday night's game against Philadelphia, Coach Jim Zorn said yesterday on his radio show.

Campbell was benched at halftime of Sunday's 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Todd Collins played the second half, but neither quarterback could lead a touchdown drive against a defense that entered the game ranked last in the NFL.

Campbell was 9 for 16 for 89 yards, with an interception. Collins, making his first appearance since the 2007 season, was 6 for 14 for 75 yards. Campbell has six touchdown passes and six interceptions for the season and ranks 19th in the NFL with a quarterback rating of 84.3

■ Chargers: Walt Daniels, a member of San Diego's game-day staff, died early yesterday, about 12 hours after falling out of the press box before the Denver Broncos-Chargers game Monday night.

Daniels, 66, appeared to suffer a head injury after falling about 25 to 30 feet from a booth that was to be used by Broncos assistants. He landed on the loge level and received CPR before being taken to the hospital.

■ Steelers: Coach Mike Tomlin said that kicker Jeff Reed will play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings despite a recent brush with the law. Reed is charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness for scuffling with Pittsburgh police outside a bar near Heinz Field hours after Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns.

Police were citing Reed's teammate, Matt Spaeth, for urinating outside the bar when Reed intervened. Police say that Reed took a "fighting stance" and challenged the officers. Reed's agent denies that.

■ Patriots: New England released receiver Joey Galloway and tight end Michael Matthews.

Galloway, a first-round draft pick in 1995, signed with the Patriots as a free agent after 14 seasons in Seattle. He played in three games and had seven catches for 67 yards. Matthews was acquired from the New York Giants in a September trade and played in three games for the Patriots as a reserve tight end and on special teams.

■ Falcons: Atlanta has signed safety Jamaal Fudge to fill the roster spot of injured cornerback Brian Williams, who was placed on injured reserve.

Williams tore the anterior-cruciate ligament in his right knee in Sunday night's win over Chicago. He started each of the Falcons' first five games.

Fudge was released by the Falcons after training camp. He played in 10 games with the team last season and had 12 tackles.

Fudge was signed by Jacksonville as a rookie free agent in 2006. The Falcons signed Fudge off waivers on Sept. 2, 2008.

Williams is the second starter on defense to have a season-ending knee injury. Rookie defensive tackle Peria Jerry injured his left knee against Carolina on Sept. 20.

■ Eagles: Philadelphia acquired linebacker Will Witherspoon from the St. Louis Rams for rookie wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round pick in 2010.

The Eagles made the trade yesterday to get Witherspoon, an eight-year veteran who spent his first four seasons with Carolina. He was the Rams' starter at the weak-side spot and had 36 tackles and one forced fumble this season.

Witherspoon has made more than 100 tackles three times in his career and has missed only two games to injury.

Gibson, a sixth-round pick, was inactive for all six games with Philadelphia.
