KERNERSVILLE
Coach Charlie Jones said that his Bishop McGuinness Villains had to change their personality in last night's 22-13 win over Surry Central.
"It was a good test for us," Jones said of his Villains (7-1, 3-1 Northwest 2-A/1-A), who will play top-ranked Mount Airy next week. "We've had so much success running away from people, and they came in prepared for the sweep. (In the second half), we had to run inside. I was pleased with the way we pounded it inside."
Surry Central fell to 0-8 and 0-4 despite playing the Villains tough.
"It's what we've been doing a lot lately," Coach Monty Southern of the Eagles said. "But it wasn't good enough to win. A game like this is almost harder on the kids."
The Villains rushed for 220 yards, as quarterback Josh Rathburn had 88 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Marty DeFrancesco added 76 yards on 15 carries. Bishop McGuinness completed three passes for 18 yards.
The Eagles gained 71 yards rushing, including 32 yards on three carries by Wade Dawson. They were 9 of 17 passing for 112 yards.
Surry Central's most-effective play in the first quarter was a punt. The Eagles were forced to punt from their own 39. The Villains fumbled the punt, and Surry Central's Shane Johnson recovered at the Bishop McGuinness 20. On third and 4, quarterback Dave Wilmoth ran 6 yards and picked up a first down at the 8.
Wilmoth fumbled on the next carry at the 1, but the Eagles recovered and Wilmoth scored on the next play. The kick failed, and Surry Central led 6-0.
The Villains returned the ensuing kickoff to the Surry Central 46 and moved to the Eagles' 16. A pass fell incomplete on fourth down, turning the ball over.
Surry Central intercepted a pass with 2:20 left in the half, but the Villains recovered a fumble at the Eagles' 16. DeFrancesco ran 11 yards to the 5, and Thomas Lawler scored on the next play. Kevin Saxon's kick made it 7-6 with 2:20 left in the half.
Rathburn ran 46 yards for a touchdown, and his pass for two to Lawler made it 15-6 with 7:16 left in the third quarter.
The Eagles moved 68 yards for a second touchdown. The big play was Alex Wilmoth's 21-yard run to the Surry Central 13. On third down, Casey Felts ran 8 yards through a gaping hole, and the kick made it 15-13 at the 1:37 mark of the third quarter.
The Villains started at the Surry Central 42 and moved for another touchdown. Rathburn ran 25 yards to the Eagles' 13 and later scored from inside the 1-yard line. The kick made it 22-13 with 8:41 to play.
Bishop McGuinness took over after a partially blocked punt at its 48 and drove to the Surry Central 22. The Villains later turned the ball over on downs.
The Eagles completed a 8-yard pass, and a roughing-the-passer penalty on the play moved the ball to the Villains' 47. A long pass from Dave Wilmoth to Alex Wilmoth moved the ball to the Bishop McGuinness 17. A penalty moved the ball back to the 33.
The Villains later were whistled for an illegal forward pass on fourth down and the Eagles turned the ball over on downs with 49 seconds left.
