Winless WSSU falls to Howard

WASHINGTON

Willie Carter scored the game's only touchdown and Howard held on to beat winless Winston-Salem State 7-3 yesterday.

Carter, who had seven catches for 116 yards for the Bison (2-2), scored on a 20-yard pass from Willie Haigler in the third quarter. Haigler was 18 for 44 for 193 yards.

Winston-Salem State (0-5) scored with 8:45 remaining on a 45-yard field goal by freshman Landen Thayer.

The Rams have lost five straight for the first time since 1975.

Howard had opportunities to pad its lead early, but the Bison missed a field-goal attempt and Haigler threw an interception deep in Rams' territory in the second half.

The first half featured a duel between the punters, who had career days. Thayer had 10 punts that averaged almost 47 yards per attempt.

Howard's punter, Patrick Wolff, was equally effective. He placed the ball inside the 10-yard line five times, including two that landed inside the 2-yard line.

Winston-Salem State (0-5) got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter with a 10-play drive. But the Howard defense held, forcing a 43-yard field goal by Thayer with 8:45 left in the game.

Howard stopped Winston-Salem State on its next possession and forced a punt, but punt returner Jeff Miller fumbled, giving the Rams good field position at the Howard 14-yard line with just over three minutes left.

But Winston-Salem State had a bad snap on first down that lost 14 yards. The Rams never recovered as the Bison, led by Will Croner's sack and pressure on Dunston, held on downs and took over to run out the clock.

The Rams' next game will be on Oct. 17, when they travel to Davis, Calif. to face the Aggies of UC-Davis. UC-Davis played at No. 5 Boise State last night.
