Golf Roundup: Piercy, Kuchar both 14-under

Turning Stone Resort Championship: Scott Piercy shot a 6-under 66 yesterday for a share of the lead with Matt Kuchar after the third round of the tournament in Verona, N.Y.
Kuchar had a 67 to match Piercy at 14-under 202 on the Atunyote Golf Club course.
With the sun shinning after two days of heavy rain, Kuchar strung together four birdies over a seven-hole stretch.
Piercy had even better run, making four birdies in a five-hole span in the first Fall Series tournamentt of the year.
Rod Pampling (65) and Leif Olson (68) were a stroke back.
Nicholas Thompson (69) was two strokes behind.

Navistar LPGA Classic: Defending champion Lorena Ochoa shot a 6-under 66 yesterday to take a three-stroke lead in the tournament at Prattville, Ala., leaving 14-year-old Alexis Thompson eight strokes behind.
Ochoa, second last week behind Sophie Gustafson in California, had a 16-under 200 total on The Senator course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill complex. She birdied six of her final 12 holes in the bogey-free round.
The top-ranked Mexican star is winless in her last 11 starts. She has two victories in 17 events this season after winning 21 times the previous three years.
Thompson, the Florida ninth-grader who was part of a five-way tie for the second-round lead, had a 74 to drop into a tie for 13th at 8 under.

U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship: Mike McCoy, Cameron Mackenzie, Taylor Massey and Derek Berg shot 68s yesterday to share the lead in the first round of qualifying in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at The Kiawah Island Club.
The 46-year-old McCoy, from West Des Moines, Iowa, and Mackenzie, a 27-year-old Canadian, had 4-under rounds on the Cassique course.

U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur: Wendi Golden shot a 1-under 71 yesterday to take the first-round lead in qualifying for the tournament at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala, Fla.
The 34-year-old Golden, from Sarasota, Fla., had a two-stroke lead over 2006 and 2007 Meghan Stassi of Oakland Park, Fla.; Jennifer Lucas of Knoxville, Tenn.; Lisa McGill of Philadelphia; Janet Moore of Greenwood Village, Colo.; and Dawn Woodard of Greer, S.C.
The top 64 after the second round of qualifying will advance to match play.
