Notre Dame eliminates FSU women

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Melissa Henderson and Haley Ford scored first-half goals less than a minute apart yesterday to lift Notre Dame to a 2-0 victory against host Florida State in a quarterfinal match of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament.

The result sets up a rematch of last season's championship game between Notre Dame and North Carolina. UNC won that one 2-1 to defeat Notre Dame for the title for the second time in three years.

In Tallahassee, Fla., yesterday, Henderson scored unassisted at 38:35, and Ford added an insurance goal at 39:26 as the Irish improved to 21-3-1.

Each team had 14 shots, but Notre Dame's Nikki Weiss made five saves for the shutout.

Florida State finished 19-5-1.

This season's College Cup will be in College Station, Texas, with the winner of a late match last night between Boston College and Stanford meeting tonight's Portland-UCLA winner in the other semifinal.

The national semifinals will be Dec. 4, and the title match will be Dec. 6.
