Prep-Sports Notebook: Mustangs piling up wrestling wins

»  Comments | Post a Comment

■ Parkland's wrestling team, the winner of three straight NCHSAA 3-A state titles in team-tournament competition, is approaching the NCHSAA record for consecutive victories in dual matches.

The Mustangs -- coached by Maurice Atwood -- went into a tournament on their home mat yesterday in which they were scheduled to wrestle five matches.

Victories in all five would have given them 140 straight wins and a share of the state record that old Appalachian High of Boone set between 1952 and 1965.

If the streak was still active after last night, Parkland's first chance to set the record will be Dec. 3 at home against Lake Norman. Parkland had not lost a dual match since February 2006.

Parkland, which moved up to Class 4-A this year, has two returning individual state champions in Marciano Ali (160) and Desean Grimes-Hines (171).

■ Five area girls basketball teams -- including Mount Tabor -- will play in the Thanksgiving Headliners Classic at High Point Central on Saturday, a competition featuring eight games and involving three programs that played for state titles last March.

The feature game at 7 p.m. will be a rematch of last spring's NCHSAA 3-A final between Greensboro Dudley, the eventual champion, and Gastonia Forestview. Mount Tabor will play Salisbury, the defending NCHSAA 2-A champ, at 2:30.

Other area teams playing are: Lexington (against Greensboro Day at 10 a.m.); Wilkes Central (against Morganton Patton at 11:30); Thomasville (against Greensboro Grimsley at 1 p.m.); and High Point Central (against Hope Mills South View at 5:30).

Kelly Secrest, a senior left-handed pitcher and outfielder from North Davidson, has signed a letter of intent to pitch for UNC Wilmington, Coach Mark Scalf of UNCW announced in a release.

Secrest was an all-Central Piedmont 4-A pick last year and helped North to the semifinals of the NCHSAA 4-A playoffs.

"Kelly has a good feel for three pitches," Coach Mike Meadows of North said. "He's a strong-body prospect with a quick arm. Kelly has a bulldog mentality and really competes."

Kistin Aloi, a senior at Mount Tabor, has signed a letter of intent to compete in gymnastics at North Carolina, Coach Derek Galvin of UNC announced in a release.

Aloi, who competes for High Point Gymnastics, placed fourth on the balance beam and 17th in the all-around at the 2009 Junior Olympics Level 10 National Championships.

"Kristin's rapid improvement in the past year and a half is the result of her determined effort and commitment to the pursuit of her goals as a Junior Olympic Level 10 gymnast," Galvin said.
