■ Charlie Weis says he wouldn't blame Notre Dame for firing him.
"If they decide to make a change, I'd have to say I'd have a tough time arguing with that. If they decide to make a change, I'd have a tough time arguing that because 6-5 is not good enough," Weis said yesterday. "Especially when you've lost five games by a touchdown or less and several three-point games that went right down to the wire...."
■ Iowa and Penn State ended their seasons eligible for at-large BCS invitations, and Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech are also in position to become eligible for big-money bowl bids.
The top seven teams in the BCS standings released Sunday were unchanged from last week, with No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Texas still in control of the destinies in the national-championship race.
Barring any major upsets the next two weeks, the winner of the Florida-Alabama SEC title game will face Texas in the BCS title game Jan. 7 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
With fourth-place TCU a victory away from securing an automatic BCS bid and the loser of Florida-Alabama a lock to be selected, only two at-large berths would remain.
■ Princeton fired Coach Roger Hughes after 10 seasons, Athletics Director Gary Walters announced yesterday.
Hughes had a 47-52 record and three winning seasons and coached Princeton to the Ivy League title in 2006. Hughes was fired the day after the Tigers defeated Dartmouth 23-11 to finish 4-6.
■ Jacory Harris putting on a sling after Miami's 34-16 win over Duke on Saturday was merely for comic effect.
Harris, Miami's quarterback, appeared for his postgame interview with his right, throwing arm supported by a sling. He has a thumb injury on that hand, the exact severity of which has not been announced, and played against Duke with his hand wrapped in tape.
Harris ripped off the sling when he left the room, and turns out, Coach Randy Shannon told reporters yesterday, that he was "getting some of you guys."
