Junior Brittany Waters of Wake Forest scored 33 points and added 12 rebounds as the Deacons women's basketball team rolled past Miami (Ohio) 78-62, in Oxford yesterday.
Wake Forest improved to 3-0; Miami fell to 1-2.
Waters' career-high 33-point effort is the best single-game scoring performance since former Deacon Deirdre Naughton scored 37 points against Savannah State on Feb. 21, 2006. Waters also had two blocks and a steal.
Freshman Sandra Garcia and sophomore Secily Ray of Wake Forest scored 10 points each.
Point guard Brooke Thomas of the Deacons had 10 assists, one shy of her career high. Thomas had a career-high seven rebounds and two blocks in 32 minutes. Freshman guard Lakevia Boykin added nine points off the WFU bench.
Ashleigh Brown and Courtney Osborn led the RedHawks with 14 points each and Kirsten Olowinski had seven rebounds.
The Deacons shot 45 percent from the floor and 38 percent from the 3-point line.
Miami (Ohio) had a 14-7 lead at the 13-minute mark. Sparked by a layup from Waters, the Deacons started an 8-0 run that put the Deacons up 15-14.
A 3-point basket from Boykin at 8:39 pushed the Deacons in front 18-16, and they stayed on top for the rest of the game. With 12:32 to play, Waters banked in a jumper that gave Wake Forest its largest lead of the game, 60-31.
