A header by Wake Forest midfielder Bess Harrington in the final second of regulation found the back of the net for a goal as the Deacons defeated South Carolina 1-0 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at Stone Stadium last night.
The Deacons (16-5-2) will play the North Carolina-Maryland winner in the next round.
The match was played before a crowd of 4,347 fans, largest in the history of a South Carolina women's soccer match.
The Deacons' winning play was set up on a corner kick by Allie Sadow. With four seconds remaining, Jiff Hutchinson booted the ball into the box that Harrington headed past goalkeeper Mollie Patton.
It was Harrington's second goal of the season.
The goal capped a wild night of playoff soccer that saw both teams play even most of the night.
Wake Forest controlled the opening 45 minutes, with USC taking the advantage in the second half.
South Carolina nearly scored in both the 60th and 61st minutes that saw a flurry of chances inside the six-yard box. Kortney Rhodes got off a shot that was blocked by a Wake Forest defender. On the play the ball spun towards Brooke Jacobs, who took a direct shot on the goal. Amanda Barasha made the save, but could not control the ball, allowing Jacobs another opportunity to get off a shot that went off one of the goal posts.
Wake Forest had a chance to score in the 67th minute, but her shot went wide and high of the goal. Kaley Fountain attempted a shot in the 71st minute from 10 yards out, but goalie Ellen Fahey blocked the shot.
Barasha finished with three save.
