Duke landed another basketball recruiting class ranked among the nation's top 10, and baseball coach Tom Walter of Wake Forest brought in nine players during the NCAA's early-signing period.
At Duke, Mike Krzyzewski signed Josh Hairston, Kyrie Irving and Tyler Thornton, a class ranked No. 5 overall by Rivals.com.
Hairston, a 6-8 power forward from Spotsylvania, Va., averaged 23.8 points and 10.6 rebounds last season while leading Courtland to Virginia's Group AA, Division 4 state championship and was named the state player of the year by the Virginia High School Coaches Association.
Irving, a 6-2 point guard from Elizabeth, N.J., averaged 16.6 points and was all-state at St. Patrick High. Thornton, a 6-2 point guard from Washington, D.C., averaged 14.4 points at Gonzaga College High last season.
Walter's baseball class at Wake Forest includes four pitchers -- left-handers Brian Holmes (Lawrenceville, Ga.), and John McLeod (Renton, Wash.), and right-handers Nathan Jones (Greenland, N.H.) and Chris Wilson (West Covina, Calif.).
Also signing were: catcher Brett Armour (Gainesville, Ga.), shortstop Jack Fischer (Hinsdale, Ill.), outfielder Kevin Jordan (Columbus, Ga.), shortstop Conor Keniry (Milford, Conn.) and catcher/Charlie Morgan (Springfield, Va.).
Elsewhere Erin Holmes, a senior at North Davidson, has signed a swimming scholarship with Pfeiffer, according to Sean Fox of Pfeiffer's sports-information office.
