The Wake Forest women's basketball team jumped in front of South Florida, the the defending WNIT champion, 24-0, and kept up that momentum for the rest of the game in a 62-45 win last night at Joel Coliseum.
Junior Brittany Waters led Wake Forest with 21 points and freshman Sandra Garcia had a team-high 10 rebounds. Janae Stokes and Jessica Lawson scored 13 points each for the Bulls, and Lawson had 13 rebounds.
Wake Forest improved to 2-0 and South Florida fell to 1-2.
Waters scored 10 of Wake Forest's 24 points in the opening 24-0 run, and on the defensive end added three blocks and four steals. Wake Forest didn't allow an offensive rebound by South Florida until the 6:16 mark of the first half.
Stokes scored the first points for the Bulls, hitting a 3-pointer at the 8:01 mark. Two 3-pointers from Stokes and Leondra Doomes-Stephens in the final minute of the opening half set the halftime score at 32-16.
Back-to-back baskets from Lawson and Keneisha Saunders cut the Wake Forest lead to 12 points at the start of the second half.
Waters added a layup and a South Florida foul on Saunders returned the ball to Wake Forest. Garcia added another Wake Forest basket to push the lead up to 36-20 by the 16:49 mark.
At 11:02, Courteney Morris stole the ball from Saunders and converted on a fast break to put Wake Forest back in front by 24 points (50-26). Morris finished the game with 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Wake Forest is scheduled to play its first road game on Saturday, playing Miami (Ohio) in Oxford at 2 p.m.
