Shelby defeated visiting Surry Central 2-1 in overtime last night to win the NCHSAA Class 2-A West title.
It was the 18th consecutive win for the Golden Lions (22-3-1), who were the state runners-up in Class 2-A last season. They advanced to the state-title game this weekend at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary and will play the winner of last night's East final between Swansboro and Pittsboro Northwood. Dates and times for the championship game will be announced today.
Surry Central ended its season with a record of 23-3.
