College Basketball Roundup: Allen, Delaney spark Virginia Tech

State/area men

Virginia Tech 59, UNC Greensboro 46: Jeff Allen scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Virginia Tech broke open a tie game with an 11-0 run midway through the second half to defeat UNC Greensboro last night.

UNCG tied the game at 38 on a basket by Kyle Randall with 10:48 left, but Allen and Malcolm Delaney sparked Tech's 11-0 run, with Delaney scoring seven of points. Delaney's 3 with 6:39 left gave Tech a 49-38 lead, and UNCG came no closer than nine.

Campbell 74, East Carolina 68: Jonathan Rodriguez scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Campbell's win last night. Campbell (2-0) trailed 37-36 at halftime after shootng 35 percent. The Camels shot 50 percent in the second (13 of 26) and used a 15-6 run to take a 70-64 lead on two free throws by Junard Hartley with 1:51 left.

College of Charleston 67, Winthrop 59: Andrew Goudelock scored 18 points, and Jeremy Simmons added 14 to help College of Charleston even its record at 1-1.

Wofford 60, Georgia 57: Cameron Rundles made a 1-and-1 with 3.1 seconds remaining to lift Wofford over Georgia. A desperation 3-point shot at the buzzer by Georgia's Trey Thompkins missed, and Wofford posted its first win over Georgia in eight tries.

Ohio 93, N.C. A&T 82: Jay Kinney scored 23 points and hit 5 of 9 from 3-point range to lift Ohio. Kinney hit a 3 for a 26-10 lead with 11:43 left in the first half, and A&T (1-2) didn't threaten the rest of the way.

Furman 68, Presbyterian 64: Amu Saaka scored a career-high 29 points to help Furman rally past Presbyterian.
The Blue Hose (0-2) led 33-30 at halftime, but the Paladins (2-0) tied the score at 36 on two Saaka free throws with 18:03 left, then hit 4 of 5 free throws late to seal it.

Guilford 91, Methodist 72: Clay Henson scored a game-high 22 points, and Tyler Sanborn added 20 points and 16 rebounds in Guilford's season-opening win last night. Guilford is ranked No. 3 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

Coastal Carolina 69, Elon 46: Joseph Harris had 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead Coastal Carolina to victory in a consolation game at the NIT Season Tip-Off in Durham.

Boston College 72, St. Francis (N.Y.) 44: Tyler Roche scored 19 points, Reggie Jackson had 17, and Boston College tuned up for its trip to this weekend's Paradise Jam tournament with a victory over St. Francis.

Top 25 men

No. 2 Michigan State 75, Gonzaga 71: Durrell Summers hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:02 left, made two free throws with 5.7 seconds left and finished with 21 points to help No. 2 Michigan State rally for a win over Gonzaga last night.

No. 10 Tennessee 124, UNC Asheville 49: Scotty Hopson had a career-high 25 points, and No. 10 Tennessee set a school record for points in a game last night.
The win was Coach Bruce Pearl's 100th with the Volunteers, and the 124 points broke Tennessee's previous single-game record of 121.

No. 12 Connecticut 76, Hofstra 67: Jerome Dyson scored 23 points to help Connecticut rally for a win in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
UConn (3-0) trailed 54-45 with nine minutes left but went up 59-58 on two free throws by Dyson with 5:20 to go. The teams exchanged the lead four times before the Huskies went up for good with 4:16 left.

No. 17 Oklahoma 72, Louisiana-Monroe 61: Willie Warren scored 24 points, Tony Crocker added 13, and No. 17 Oklahoma notched the 1,500th win in the program history last night. Oklahoma (2-0) struggled early with ULM's zone pressure but eventually took the lead for good with a 9-0 run with about 14 minutes left.

No. 19 Georgetown 46, Temple 45: Greg Monroe scored on a driving layup with 6.5 seconds to play, rescuing No. 19 Georgetown from a lackluster effort in Washington.
The Hoyas won despite having more fouls (18) and turnovers (16) than made baskets (15) and blowing a 12-point second-half lead.

No. 20 Louisville 96, Arkansas 66: Reginald Delk scored 20 points in a reserve role to double his previous career high and sparked key surges in both halves to help No. 20 Louisville open with a win over Arkansas in the Hall of Fame Showcase.

No. 22 Clemson 79, Liberty 39: David Potter scored a career-high 17 points and hit five of No. 22 Clemson's 10 3-pointers in a win at Liberty.
The Tigers (2-0), who needed to rally late last season to beat the Flames, had no such issues thistime. They led 17-1 before the Flames made their first field goal — with 13:02 left in the first half — and by a wide margin throughout.

No. 23 Illinois 80, Northern Illinois 61: Brandon Paul scored 20 points in the first half, leading No. 23 Illinois past Northern Illinois. Paul, a freshman guard, had 14 of Illinois' first 21 points and made 4 of 8 on 3-point shots.

No. 25 Maryland 71, Fairfield 42: Eric Hayes scored 14 points, and No. 25 Maryland celebrated its return to the AP Top 25 with a rout of Fairfield. Landon Milbourne added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Sean Mosley scored 13 for the Terps, who are in the AP poll for the first time since the end of the 2006-07 season.

State/area women

N.C. State 84, Florida Atlantic 70: Amber White led three players in double figures with 25 points as N.C. State defeated Florida Atlantic.
Marissa Kastanek added 20 points, and former Carver star Brittany Strachan had in 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Liberty 60, UNCG 42: Freshman Devon Brown scored a game-high 26 points and Liberty took advantage of host UNC Greensboro's cold shooting (15 for 52, 28.8 percent).

Piedmont Baptist 75, Warren Wilson 51: Erica Buffaloe finished with 17 points, six assists and four steals to lead Piedmont Baptist to victory. Emily Buffaloe and Kirby Hill added 15 points each, and Courtney Peacock scored 13 for Piedmont (3-1).

Top 25 women

No. 3 Ohio State 88, Alabama-Birmingham 55: Jantel Lavender scored 21 of her 30 points in the first half to power No. 3 Ohio State to a win at home. She came close to outscoring the Blazers in the first half when she hit 10 of 11 shots and helped the Buckeyes to a 43-24 lead.

No. 6 Tennessee 91, Texas Tech 53: Taber Spani scored 18 points, and Glory Johnson added 17 to lead No. 6 Tennessee to a convincing win.
Kierra Mallard scored 15 for Texas Tech, which shot just 30 percent from the field.

No. 8 Baylor 100, Tennessee Tech 55: Freshman Brittney Griner had 10 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks but missed her only dunk attempt before fouling out with 10 minutes left in Baylor's home opener.

The 6-8 Griner tried a right-handed slam early in the second half, but the ball caromed off the back of the rim. She rebounded her miss and was fouled on a putback try.

No. 13 Florida State 66, Florida 62: Chasity Clayton scored 13 points, Christian Hunnicutt added 10, and No. 13 Florida State beat rival Florida. The Gators (1-1) led 62-60 with 2:02 to play, but the Seminoles scored the last six points.

Hartford 62, No. 23 Louisville 50: Erica Beverly had 14 points and 11 rebounds to help Hartford upset No. 23 Louisville. The Hawks defeated a ranked opponent for the fifth straight season. Louisville, which reached the national-championship game last season, had 25 turnovers.
