■ Eagles: The playing status of All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook is uncertain after he suffered another concussion in Philadelphia's 31-23 loss at San Diego.
Westbrook was playing his first game after sitting out two because of a concussion suffered Oct. 26. He was injured in the third quarter Sunday on a screen play. Coach Andy Reid said that the team will take precautions with Westbrook and that it's too early to tell when, or if, Westbrook will return this season.
"Football right now for Brian Westbrook is not the important thing," Reid said. "It's making sure that we get him analyzed, tested and taken care of and then we'll go from there. Not that we didn't do that before.
Westbrook, 30, suffered the first concussion of his career when he hit his head on a defender's knee during a Monday night win at Washington last month. He briefly lost consciousness.
■ Titans: Owner Bud Adams of Tennessee apologized yesterday for making an obscene gesture to Buffalo fans while celebrating the Titans' victory over the Bills on Sunday.
WTVF-TV reported that Adams extended his middle fingers while in his luxury suite. The Tennessean newspaper reported that Adams also was seen making the gesture again on the field after the game.
The NFL said yesterday that the league was looking into the reports, and Adams, 86, issued an apology a couple of hours later.
"I do realize that those types of things shouldn't happen," Adams said in a statement. "I need to specifically apologize to the Bills, their fans, our fans and the NFL. I obviously have a great deal of respect for Ralph Wilson and the history we have shared. I also understand there will probably be league discipline for my actions and I will accept those."
■ Redskins: Clinton Portis is still experiencing "a little blurriness" from his concussion and it's uncertain if he'll play this weekend against Dallas. When Portis does return, he'll regain his starting job -- even though the Redskins had their best rushing day of the season without him.
Coach Jim Zorn said yesterday that Portis is improving but continues to feels the effects of a helmet-to-helmet hit against Atlanta on Nov. 8. Portis sat out Sunday's 27-17 win over Denver, ending his streak of 40 consecutive starts.
The Redskins ran for 174 yards Sunday, with Ladell Betts gaining 114.
Portis, who has battled several leg injuries this year, is having one of the worst seasons of his career, averaging just 4 yards a carry and with only one 100-yard game, but Zorn said he remains the No. 1 back.
