Top 25 men

No. 4 Kentucky 72, Miami (Ohio) 70: Kentucky freshman John Wall scored 19 points — including the game-winning jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining — to lift the Wildcats past Miami (Ohio) last night in Lexington, Ky.
After Miami's Kenny Hayes hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 70 with six seconds left, Wall raced down the floor and pulled up from the wing. The ball fell through the net and Wall raced up the floor pounding his chest in celebration as the crowd roared.
Patrick Patterson had 17 points and 10 rebounds and DeMarcus Cousins had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (2-0).
Nick Winbush led Miami with 26 points and the RedHawks nearly pulled off the upset by making 15 of 26 3-pointers.

No. 5 Villanova 103, Penn 65: Maalik Wayns scored 16 points, Corey Stokes, Scottie Reynolds and Taylor King each added 14 and Villanova beat visiting Pennsylvania last night.
Corey Fisher scored 13 and Antonio Pena contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds for the balanced Wildcats (2-0), who have won 19 of their last 20 games in Big Five play also encompassing Temple, La Salle and Saint Joseph's. Villanova has won seven straight against Penn.

No. 12 Connecticut 77, Colgate 63: Stanley Robinson scored 18 points leading five Connecticut players in double figures as the Huskies beat Colgate in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off last night in Storrs, Conn.
Robinson hit all eight of his shots, including two 3-pointers. He was 3 of 23 from 3-point range all of last season.

No. 24 Minnesota 82, Stephen F. Austin 42: Freshman Rodney Williams had three dunks and two 3s, finishing with 14 points to help Minnesota pull away from Stephen F. Austin last night in Minneapolis.
Lawrence Westbrook and Devoe Joseph led the Gophers (2-0) with 15 points apiece and Damian Johnson contributed 11 second-half points, five assists and five steals to lead the romp after a rough start. Minnesota went 11 for 19 from 3-point range.

State/area men

UNC Charlotte 75, Elon 61: Shamari Spears scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half and UNC Charlotte beat Elon in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off last night in Durham.
Rashad Coleman added 11 points and Dijuan Harris had 10 for the 49ers (2-0). They shot 41 percent in advancing to a second-round matchup against No. 9 Duke tonight.
Josh Bonney scored 15 points and Adam Constantine added 11 for the Phoenix (1-1). They will face Coastal Carolina in a consolation game.
UNC Charlotte trailed briefly and gave itself plenty of breathing room with a 25-10 run that bridged halftime.

South Florida 66, Virginia 49: Dominique Jones had 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals to lead South Florida past cold-shooting Virginia last night in Tampa, Fla.
The Bulls (2-0) began the second half with a 17-5 run to take a 48-32 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game. The closest Virginia (1-1) got the rest of the way was 10 points. The Cavaliers were held to one field goal in the final 7 minutes.

Florida State 87, Jacksonville 61: Solomon Alabi's 17 points led a balanced Florida State offense and the Seminoles beat Jacksonville last night in Tallahassee.
The 7-1 Alabi helped the Seminoles take advantage of their height in the rout.

Miami 108, Nova Southeastern 58: James Dews scored 19 points to lead Miami past Nova Southeastern last night in Coral Gables.
Malcolm Grant added 17 points and freshman Durand Scott had 14 points and eight assists for the Hurricanes, who saw all 13 players score.

South Carolina 90, Georgia Southern 66: Dominique Archie scored 18 points and South Carolina pulled away from Georgia Southern last night in Columbia, S.C.
Devan Downey added 14 points, Brandis Raley-Ross scored 13 and Mike Holmes added 12 for the Gamecocks (2-0).

Gardner-Webb 89, Montreat 62: David Brown scored 15 points in 16 minutes off the bench and Gardner-Webb defeated Montreat last night in Boiling Springs.
Brown paced four Bulldogs (2-0) in double figures as C.J. Hailey and Jonathan Moore scored 13 points each. Stefon Johnson chipped in with 11 points and three blocks for Gardner-Webb.

State/area women

Gardner-Webb 70, Winston-Salem State 38: Margaret Roundtree scored 10 points and Gardner-Webb beat Winston-Salem State last night in Boiling Springs.
The Rams shots 27 percent from the field and committed 23 turnovers.
Vontisha Woods led WSSU (0-2) with 13 points and eight rebounds.
WSSU was within 36-26 at halftime, but the Rams were outscored 34-12 in the second half.

South Carolina 70, UNC Charlotte 66 (OT): Valerie Nainima and Kelsey Bone each scored 22 points to lead visiting South Carolina past UNC Charlotte last night in overtime.
Shannon McCallum of UNCC led all scorers with 25 points. Aysha Jones added 16 points for the 49ers.

Morgan State 75, N.C. Central 38: Georgien Williams scored 21 points to lead Morgan State past N.C. Central last night in Baltimore.
Latoya Bennett and Brittany Myatt each had 10 points for NCCU.

Salem 80, Agnes Scott 70: Lauren Redman (18 points), Sarah Smith (17), Kelsey Rector (14) and Jessi Watts (10) all scored in double figures Sunday as Salem opened its season with a win at home.
Salem led 42-26 at the half, shot 50.8 percent from the field for the game and had a 47-42 advantage on the boards, with Shamaz Denerson leading the way with 15 rebounds. Kimberly Reeves led Agnes Scott with 32 points.
