After victories, Deacs and Tar Heels to meet

No. 7 Wake Forest and No. 3 North Carolina each won in the opening round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championships yesterday at Kentner Stadium, and they will play each other today.

The Deacons (13-6) defeated No. 13 Indiana 2-0, and the Tar Heels (17-2) downed No. 16 Ohio State 4-1 to advance to the quarterfinals today at 2 p.m. The Tar Heels defeated the Deacons twice during the regular season, winning 4-1 in Chapel Hill and 3-0 at Kentner Stadium.

"That's what you love about tournaments," said Coach Jennifer Averill of Wake Forest. "You bank the experience that you've had with your opponent, but let go of the results when it's tournament time. We focus on what experiences we've had in each game and don't focus on our losses."

Kim Romansky scored in the 12th minute on a penalty corner for the Deacons, tapping in a cross from Liza Casella. Hilary Moore scored the other goal for the Deacons with 10 minutes remaining on an assist from Aileen Davis.

The Wake Forest-UNC winner will advance to the NCAA semifinals, which will be held Friday at Kentner Stadium.

Danielle Forward scored two goals for the Tar Heels , with Illse Davids and Melanie Brill scoring one goal each.

"We're delighted to advance to the second round," said Coach Karen Shelton of UNC. "At this time of year, it's always a relief to win the first one. At no point in the game did we feel totally comfortable. Ohio State gave us an awful lot to have to prepare for, and they looked dangerous throughout. I credit our team for playing some very good team defense to limit them to two penalty corners. I thought it was a good day defensively for us, and of course I'm happy we were able to score four goals."
