■ Three freshmen at Tennessee, including highly regarded receiver Nu'Keese Richardson and starting safety Janzen Jackson, were charged with attempted armed robbery yesterday.
Richardson, Jackson and defensive back Mike Edwards, all 18, and companion Marie Montmarquet, 22, were charged after a report of an armed robbery at a gas station in an area known as "The Strip" at the edge of Tennessee's campus in Knoxville.
"At this time we are currently evaluating the circumstances surrounding an incident involving Mike Edwards, Janzen Jackson and Nu'Keese Richardson," Athletics Director Mike Hamilton said. "Any decisions or comments regarding their status will not be made until the evaluations are complete."
The three victims told police they were sitting in their parked vehicle about 2 a.m. yesterday at a gas station near campus when two males dressed in hooded jackets, one holding a handgun, approached and demanded, "Give us everything you've got." The three suspects were seen leaving in a Toyota Prius, and police pulled over a vehicle matching the description on campus. Police spotted a pellet gun and hooded jackets and later found drug paraphernalia and a bag of what appeared to be marijuana.
■ Derrick Morgan, a junior defensive end at Georgia Tech who ranks fifth in the country with 11½ sacks, said he will "definitely" examine his NFL Draft status after the season. Some early mock drafts list him as a first-round pick in 2010. MyNFLdraft.com projects him as the No. 13 pick, and Bleacher Report's mock draft has him at No. 27.
■ Coach Steve Spurrier said that South Carolina will be without defensive end Devin Taylor for Saturday's game against No. 1 Florida.
He said that Taylor suffered a bruised sternum in last weekend's loss at Arkansas. Taylor, a 6-7, 232-pound freshman, had started the team's first five games, then went to a reserve role. He was expected to see more playing time with starter Cliff Matthews still recovering from a separated shoulder.
Last night's game
Rutgers 31, No. 23 South Florida 0: Instead of getting even with Rutgers, South Florida didn't even get on the scoreboard for the first time in a regular-season game in its 13-year history.
Tom Savage passed for two touchdowns and Rutgers forced four turnovers, blocked a punt and recorded seven sacks in shutting out the visiting Bulls last night in a nationally televised game.
Rutgers (7-2, 2-2 Big East) has beaten USF (6-3, 2-3) four straigt times. The Scarlet Knights are bowl eligible for the fifth straight season.
