A North Carolina judge issued a temporary restraining order yesterday which will allow a high-school football team to participate in the state playoffs.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that Cumberland County Superior Court Judge Jack Thompson met with attorneys for the players from Terry Sanford High School and the NCHSAA.
Attorneys for the players said the judge issued the order around 5:45 p.m., meaning the school will face Pine Forest High School in a game scheduled for tonight.
Charlie Adams, executive director of the NCHSAA, said the organization was disappointed with the decision, but would have no further comment because the case is pending. He said the association expects to be in court on Monday.
Terry Sanford's team was ruled ineligible on Monday after the discovery of problems with a player's credits and attendance.
About 70 football players, students, parents and others gathered at the courthouse. One player led the group in prayer, asking that "the right thing is done."
One of the attorneys, Jason Goins, said the argument for the team was "a constitutional one."
"You can't tell kids they can't play football in a public school when they have not been notified from the people in charge as to why," Goins said.
