Deacons blank Tigers in ACC soccer tourney opener

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Freshman Andy Lubahn scored two goals to help Wake Forest defeat Clemson 3-0 yesterday in a quarterfinal game of the ACC soccer tournament at Cary's WakeMed Soccer Park.

In other quarterfinals yesterday, Virginia edged Maryland 1-0, Boston College topped Duke 1-0 in overtime, and N.C. State advanced in a shootout, defeating North Carolina 4-1 on penalty kicks after the teams played to a scoreless tie through regulation and overtime.

Wake Forest and Clemson were scoreless at halftime before Lubahn went to work. Two minutes into the second half, he took a through ball from Corben Bone and beat Duke keeper Joseph Bendik from about 13 yards out to give the Deacons a 1-0 lead.

Lubahn struck again at the 63-minute mark. He took a cross from the left and back-heeled the ball past Bendik to increase Wake Forest's lead to 2-0. Zack Schiawski and Austin da Luz were credited with assists on the play.

The Deacons put the game out of reach just two minutes after Lubahn's second goal. Luke Norman fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the lower-right corner of the goal to give the Deacons a three-goal lead.

That was more than enough for senior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald of Wake Forest, who made three saves to secure the shutout. It was Fitzgerald's sixth shutout of the season and 20th of his career.

Wake Forest, the tournament's top seed will take on No. 5-seed Virginia in one semifinal on Friday at 5:30. The Cavs advanced yesterday when Tony Tchiani's goal with three minutes to play snapped a scoreless tie against Maryland, the No. 4 seed.

Friday's other semifinal, at 8 p.m., will pit No. 3-seed Boston College against N.C. State. Boston College beat Duke in overtime when Charlie Rugg challenged Duke goakeeper James Belshaw and swung a pass to teammate Colin Murphy, who lofted a cross that Edvin Worley headed in for the winning goal. N.C. State, seeded seventh, toppled No. 2-seed North Carolina on penalty kicks. Wolfpack goalkeeper Christopher Widman held the Tar Heels scoreless through regulation and two overtime periods.

Notes: Heavy rainfall forced a change in yesterday's schedule. The quarterfinal games were originally to be played at noon, 2:30, 5:30 and 8 p.m. The wet and windy weather prompted organizers to play two games simultaneously at 3 p.m. and two more at 5:30…. Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m. will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net.
