Elon 42, Western Carolina 17: Terrell Hudgins set the all-time Football Championship Subdivision record for receiving yards and Brandon Newsome ran for four touchdowns as Elon beat Western Carolina yesterday in Cullowhee.
Hudgins caught eight passes for 153 yards and a touchdown, setting the all-time FCS record with 4,812 career yards, breaking Jerry Rice's mark of 4,693 receiving yards.
Newsome ran for 143 yards and scored on runs of 26, 18, 35 and 13 yards for the Phoenix (8-1, 6-0 Southern Conference).
With the game tied 14-14 in the second quarter, the Phoenix scored 21 unanswered points to put the game out of reach at the end of the third. Scott Riddle was 20 for 26 for 228 yards and a touchdown for the Phoenix.
Zack Jaynes was 15 for 21 with 140 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Catamounts (1-8, 1-6).
Clemson 40, Florida 24: C.J. Spiller had a career-high 165 yards rushing and his 20th touchdown of at least 50 yards and Clemson took its biggest step yet toward an Atlantic Coast Conference title with a victory over visiting Florida State last night.
Spiller, the Tigers' star senior, caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Parker and, with 312 all-purpose yards, surpassed the school record of 310 he set in Clemson's 40-37 overtime win at Miami two weeks ago.
He also closed Clemson's fifth victory over the Seminoles in the past seven meetings with a high-stepping, 5-yard scoring run as the orange-clad fans shook Death Valley.
Spiller and the Tigers (6-3, 4-2) are now in control of the ACC's Atlantic Division with games against N.C. State and Virginia left.
Florida A&M 31, N.C. A&T 27: LeRoy Vann's punt return for a score tied two NCAA records to lead Florida A&M past N.C. A&T yesterday in Tallahassee, Fla.
Vann's 51-yard touchdown on a punt return in the third quarter was the senior's fifth of the season and his eighth career punt return for a score. He tied both the NCAA single-season and career records, along with setting the Football Championship Subdivision record for career returns.
The record-setting return gave Florida A&M (7-2, 5-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) a 31-21 lead that they wouldn't relinquish in the final frame. Vann finished with 81 punt return yards and 51 yards on kickoff returns.
Lewis Kindle threw two touchdown passes and scored on a 7-yard run for A&T (5-5, 3-4). He was 16 for 30 with 206 yards and an interception. Dontavious Payne rushed for 59 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown for the Aggies.
Arkansas 33, South Carolina 16: Ryan Mallett was 23 of 27 for 329 yards to lead Arkansas past South Carolina yesterday in Fayetteville, Ark.
Mallett was 12 of 13 in the second half, and the Razorbacks scored 23 unanswered points to finish the game. Arkansas (5-4, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) needs one more win to become eligible for a bowl.
D.J. Williams caught seven passes for 137 yards for the Razorbacks, including a 69-yard reception near the end of the first half that set up a field goal.
Stephen Garcia passed for 327 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Gamecocks (6-4, 3-4), who have lost three of four and are in danger of a third straight late-season fade. Mallett and Garcia entered the game ranked 1-2 in the SEC in passing.
Coastal Carolina 26, Gardner-Webb 21: Tommy Fraser scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter and Coastal Carolina rallied to beat Gardner-Webb yesterday in Conway, S.C.
Fraser, who had 90 yards rushing, scored on a 4-yard run with 4:17 to play for the Chanticleers (4-5, 2-2 Big South). Zach MacDowall went 25 for 42 with 332 yards. He threw touchdown passes of 25 yards to Akeem Wesley and 39 yards to Marcus Whitener. The Chanticleers rolled up 473 yards of total offense.
Defensively, Josh Norman intercepted three passes for the Chanticleers.
Patrick Hall rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs (5-4, 2-2). Hall's 1-yard run near the end of the third quarter put the Bulldogs ahead 21-17.
The Chanticleers outscored the Bulldogs 10-0 in the final quarter on the strength of a 26-yard field goal by Justin Durham and Fraser's run.
Old Dominion 42, N.C. Central 28: Thomas DeMarco rushed for 225 yards and four touchdowns, and threw for another score to lead Old Dominion past N.C. Central yesterday in Norfolk, Va.
DeMarco scored on runs of 38, 25, 20 and 16 yards as the Monarchs (8-2) won their fifth straight game. His first three touchdown runs gave Old Dominion a 21-0 lead with 8:45 left in the second quarter.
Mario Crawford's 9-yard run helped the Monarchs take a 28-0 lead with 8:11 left in the third quarter before Central (2-7) scored on Michael Johnson's 13-yard pass to Earthan Ward.
It was the first of four consecutive touchdowns for the Eagles, who tied the score at 28 on Tim Shankle's 3-yard run with 10:41 left in the game.
Guilford 42, Catholic University 21: Jordan Nelson made four interceptions and the Guilford defense forced nine turnovers as the Quakers beat Catholic University yesterday in Washington.
Nelson's four interceptions set a school record and tied an ODAC record.
Quarterback Billy Watkins of Guilford completed 27 of 44 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns.
Mike Williams of the Quakers rushed for 91 yards and caught six passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Fayetteville State 21, Bowie State 10: Fayetteville State scored three second-half touchdowns and defeated Bowie State for the CIAA championship yesterday in Durham.
The Broncos scored on a 13-yard pass from Benja Williams to Jamere Pugh, a 3-yard run by Richard Medline and a 22-yard interception return by Jamaal Dixon.
Bowie scored on a 10-yard run by Ramono Flowers and a 21-yard field goal by Michael Gagne.
Lenoir-Rhyne 16, Catawba 13: Byron Darby scored on a 72-yard run and Major Herron scored on a 2-yard run to lead Lenoir-Rhyne past Catawba yesterday in Salisbury.
Terrence Porter scored on a 36-yard fumble return and Brian Terwilliger scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Dennis for Catawba.
UNC Pembroke 42, North Greenville 14: Cory Smith passed for 164 yards and two touchdowns to lead UNC Pembroke past North Greenville yesterday in Tigerville, S.C.
Travis Daniels rushed for 65 yards on 10 carries and scored one touchdown for the Braves, who finished the season with a 9-1 record.
Drake 49, Campbell 6: Mike Piatkowski passed for 201 yards and two touchdowns as Drake defeated Campbell yesterday in Des Moines, Iowa.
Piatkowski completed 21 of 26 passes, hitting Frank Pucher on an 8-yard scoring pass and Joey Orlando on a 24-yard touchdown pass.
Davidson 34, San Diego 27: Michael Blanchard rushed for 102 yards on 10 carries and threw for another 78 yards to help visiting Davidson snap a three-game losing streak and beat San Diego yesterday.
Blanchard replaced Matt Heavner at quarterback in the second quarter with the Wildcats (3-6, 3-4 Pioneer) trailing 17-14. He led two scoring drives with rushes of 22 and 35 yards that put Davidson ahead for good.
Justin Williams and Kenny Mantuo each ran for a touchdown as Davidson amassed 282 rushing yards.
Auburn 63, Furman 31: Chris Todd threw for 256 yards and four touchdowns, completing his first 14 passes, as Auburn cruised past visiting Furman yesterday.
Todd threw three touchdown passes to Darvin Adams for the Tigers (7-3), who scored on six of their first seven possessions to jump out to a 42-3 halftime lead. Todd's other scoring pass went to Mario Fannin.
Samford 31, Georgia Southern 10: Dustin Taliaferro threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third to lead Samford past Georgia Southern yesterday in Birmingham, Ala.
Taliaferro was 11 for 20 for 150 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown pass to Richie Fordham and a 69-yarder to Riley Hawkins.
