ACC Roundup: Terps slip past Deacons in semis

ACC field hockey semifinals: Top-seeded Maryland withstood two second-half goals by Wake Forest to defeat the fourth-seeded Deacons 3-2 yesterday in Charlottesville, Va.

Nicole Muracco and Emma Thomas scored first-half goals for the Terps (19-0) and took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Ameliet Rischen.

Melissa Martin and Aileen Davis scored for the Deacons (12-6) in the second half.

Maryland is in the championship game for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

Maryland outshot Wake Forest 17-15, while the Deacons held a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners. Alicia Grater made six saves for the Terps and Kaitlyn Ruhf made five stops for the Deacons.

In the other ACC semifinal, Charlotte van den Broek scored the only goal of the match to lift No. 3 seed Virginia to a 1-0 victory against No. 2 seed North Carolina.

Goalie Kim Kastuk made nine saves for the Cavaliers (18-2).

On van den Broek's goal, Inga Stockel attempted a shot that was saved by goalie Jackie Kintzer. But van den Broek scored on the rebound. It was her first goal of the season.

The Tar Heels (16-2) had a chance to force overtime when they were awarded a penalty corner with no time on the clock. Melanie Brill took the shot, but Kastuk made the save to clinch the victory.

UNC outshot Virginia 14-6 and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners.

The Maryland-Virginia championship match will be held at noon Sunday. The NCAA Tournament pairings will be announced Tuesday night.

ACC women's soccer semifinals: North Carolina scored on an own goal to defeat Boston College 1-0 in double overtime last night in Cary.

Casey Nogueira's cross was deflected into the goal by a Boston College defender.

The Tar Heels (15-3-1) will take on Florida State in the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Florida State advanced with a 2-0 win against Virginia Tech.
