Kelly Conheeney scored in the seventh minute of the first overtime period to lift Virginia Tech to a 1-0 win over Wake Forest yesterday in the first round of the ACC women's soccer tournament at Koka Booth Stadium.
In other first-round games, Florida State scored twice in the last 20 minutes to beat Duke 2-0, Boston College beat Virginia 3-2 on penalty kicks after the teams played to a scoreless tie through regulation and overtime, and North Carolina rolled past Maryland 3-0 in the day's final game.
Virginia Tech broke through for its overtime win after a corner kick from Stephanie Hylton was knocked out of the box by a Wake Forest defender. The ball came right to Conheeney, who finished from 12 yards out to give Virginia Tech a 1-0 win. The goal was Conheeney's eighth of the season, tying her for the team lead.
Wake Forest (13-5-2) held a 16-14 advantage in shots over Virginia Tech (14-6), including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Amanda Barasha suffered the loss in goal for Wake Forest, making two saves and allowing one goal. Kristin Carden had four saves to get the shutout for Virginia Tech.
In last night's final first-round game, Tobin Heath had a goal and an assist to lead the Tar Heels. Lucy Bronze also had a goal for UNC, which also benefitted from an own goal by Maryland when a shot by UNC's Maria Lubrano hit the right post and was knocked into goal by a Maryland player. The Tar Heels dominated play, owning a 17-1 shots advantage over the Terrapins.
In the tournament opener, FSU (15-3-1) broke a scoreless tie at 70:36 when Tiffany McCarty -- the ACC player of the year -- capped a long run with a shot inside the far post from 14 yards. The Seminoles made it 2-0 with an own goal at 85:21, after a Duke defender mishit a header on a corner kick.
Florida State will take on Virginia Tech on Friday in the semifinals.
In the Boston College-Virginia game, Virginia's Chantel Jones of had six saves and Boston College's Jillian Mastroianni made five saves to keep the game scoreless for 110 minutes.
Boston College will play North Carolina in Friday's semifinals.
