Rangers 1, Bruins 0: Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 shots for his 150th NHL victory and 21st career shutout, and Marian Gaborik returned from injury and scored for the fourth straight game as New York beat visiting Boston yesterday.
With most N.Y. sports fans focused on two NFL games involving local teams and the Yankees' World Series run, the Rangers returned home from a road trip in which they went 0-2 without Gaborik but beat the stingy Bruins at home.
Boston continued its season-long trend of alternating wins and losses, absorbing a tough-luck defeat one day after backup goalie Tuukka Rask shut out Edmonton at home.
Tim Thomas made 22 saves in his return to the nets. His only blemish was Gaborik's second-period goal that broke up the scoreless duel with Lundqvist.
The Rangers were outscored 6-3 in road losses to the New York Islanders and Minnesota Wild this week. Now they will try to make some noise during a three-game trip to Western Canada that begins Tuesday at Vancouver.
New York (9-5-1) ended a 1-4-1 skid.
Blue Jackets 5, Capitals 4 (OT): R.J. Umberger scored his second goal of the game on a power play 1:45 into overtime to give visiting Columbus a win against Washington yesterday.
The Capitals played much of the game without Alex Ovechkin, who left early in the second period and did not return to the game.
Blue Jackets left wing Raffi Torres scored twice in the final 61/2 minutes of regulation, including the tying goal with 23 seconds left.
Rick Nash had a goal and two assists for Columbus (6-5-1).
Brooks Laich had goals 2:08 apart in the third period, Quintin Laing had his first goal of the season and Nicklas Backstrom also scored for the Capitals (8-2-3).
Ovechkin was tangled up with Torres about 6 minutes into the second period and fell to the ice. After he got up, he grimaced and headed straight to the locker room.
A few minutes before leaving, Ovechkin was involved in an altercation in front of the Blue Jackets' bench.
During a break in the action barely a minute into the second period, Ovechkin was bumped by Columbus left wing Jason Chimera and Ovechkin responded with a shove and players from both teams skated over to the scrum.
Ovechkin, Chimera and Blue Jacket right wing Jared Boll all received minors for roughing, and Boll was also issued a misconduct.
