GREENVILLE
Justin Dalles hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs, and Blake Cooper pitched a complete game to help South Carolina cruise past East Carolina 12-2 last night in the NCAA Greenville Regional at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Dalles and Adam Matthews each had four hits for the Gamecocks (40-21), who scored the first 12 runs on the way to an easy victory against the host Pirates (43-18). South Carolina finished with 17 hits, while Cooper (9-4) allowed two runs and struck out six despite giving up 14 hits.
Dalles hit a two-run homer in the sixth, then hit his slam in the eighth.
Corey Thompson hit a two-run homer for East Carolina, while Seth Maness (9-2) took the loss after allowing six runs and 11 hits in 62/3 innings.
Earlier in the day, after sprinting out to an 11-2 lead, East Carolina held off a Binghamton rally, taking Game 2 of the regional 11-7 in front of a crowd of 4,150.
Dustin Harrington led the offense for the Pirates, with three RBIs in four at-bats while three other East Carolina batters had two hits as part of a 10-hit effort. Bailey Daniels picked up his second win of the season in relief of starter Chris Heston, pitching four innings and striking out three.
Joe Charron had a big day for the Bearcats, going 3 for 5 with four RBIs and two home runs. Corey Taylor also had three hits in five at-bats with two RBIs.
Murphy Smith took his third loss of the season, falling to 7-3 while allowing eight earned runs on nine hits.
East Carolina had a big fourth inning with four runs on four hits on two Binghamton errors to take an 11-2 lead.
Kyle Roller had two RBIs, including a one-out single through the right side of the infield that scored Ryan Wood and Stephen Batts, who reached on a single and an error, respectively.
The Bearcats responded in the top of the fifth, stringing together five hits in six at bats to score four runs and cut their deficit to 11-6.
Binghamton drew closer in the top of the seventh, as Charron smacked his second home run of the day, pulling his team to 11-7. But Daniels shut the Bearcats out the rest of the way.
