The Wake Forest women's basketball team will enter unfamiliar territory tonight when it plays in the Women's National Invitation Tournament.

The game will be the third postseason appearance for the Deacons since 1982.

Wake Forest will play Georgetown, which defeated Winthrop 73-45 in Friday night's first-round game, in a second-round game at 5 p.m., at Joel Coliseum.

The Deacons went to the NCAA Tournament in 1988 in Joe Sanchez's first season as head coach and made the WNIT in 2005 under Coach Mike Petersen, reaching the third round.

The Deacons are 19-11 this season and can post their first 20-win season since 1987-88 with a victory.

Wake Forest last played on March 6, losing 72-70 to top-seeded Maryland in the ACC Tournament after leading much of the game. Alex Tchangoue and Corinne Groves led the Deacs with 16 points each.

Groves, a 6-3 forward, and Tchangoue, a 5-11 guard/forward who played at Forsyth Country Day, are the team leaders. Groves averages 13.7 points and 5.6 rebounds, and Tchangoue averages 13.3 points and 7.2 rebounds. Sophomore Brittany Waters is the No. 3 scorer (10.6 ppg).

Wake Forest averages 65.7 points and holds opponents to an average of 59.5 points per game. The Deacons shoot 38.3 percent from the field (718 for 1,876) and 30 percent from 3-point range (361 for 541) but have struggled at the foul line, hitting 66.7 percent (361 for 541).

Assistant coaches Natasha Adair and Bob Clark of Wake Forest both were assistants at Georgetown (1998-2004).

Wake Forest is 1-0 all-time against Georgetown, with a win in the Big 4 Classic in Greensboro in 1995.

Georgetown (18-13) is playing after the Big East Tournament for the first time under Coach Terri Williams Flournoy, who is in her fifth season with the Hoyas, and will be making its fifth appearance in the WNIT.

Georgetown (18-13) tied for ninth in the Big East regular season and lost to Seton Hall in the tournament.

Senior Karee Houlette, a 5-9 guard from Houston, leads the team in scoring (10.2 ppg), and junior Jaleesa Butler, a 6-0 forward from St. Louis, is the No. 2 scorer (9.9 ppg).

In Friday night's game, Latia Magee led Georgetown with 21 points, Monica McNutt had 17, Butler 16 and Houlette finished with 11. Georgetown shot 48.2 percent from the field (27 for 56) and was 6 for 14 from beyond the 3-point line.
