North Carolina filled the three open spots on its football-coaching staff yesterday, and Coach Butch Davis has a former UNC player and a former Appalachian State player among his new hires.
Joining the staff were Allen Mogridge, a four-year letterman at UNC from 1996 to 1999; Troy Douglas, who played at Appalachian from 1983 to 1986; and Art Kaufman.
"All three have exceptional character and a proven record of success," Davis said in a statement.
"They are tremendous teachers and dynamic recruiters who bring fresh ideas and thoughts to our program."
Mogridge will coach tight ends, one of the four positions he played at UNC. He spent the past seven seasons on the University of Buffalo's coaching staff.
"I now have the unique opportunity to go recruit kids to the university I fell in love with as a high-school senior and where I spent four wonderful years," Mogridge said in a statement.
Douglas, a receiver and a four-year starter at ASU, has been in coaching for 21 years.
He spent the last three seasons at South Florida, helping the program to three bowl bids and 26 victories, including wins over UNC in 2006 and 2007. He will coach defensive backs.
"I'm thrilled to be back in North Carolina and working with an outstanding institution like UNC," Douglas said in a statement.
Kaufman has been in coaching for 25 years. He spent last season at Southern Mississippi and will coach linebackers.
The new assistants will replace Tommy Thigpen, Steve Hagen and John Lovett. Thigpen left UNC to join Auburn's staff. Hagen was hired by the Cleveland Browns. Lovett went to Miami to become the defensive coordinator.
