Deacons to hire baseball coach

Walter will be xml_named this week

Tom Walter of the University of New Orleans will be named the head baseball coach at Wake Forest, probably as early as Monday or Tuesday.

A source familiar with the search who asked not to be named said that the Deacons have reached agreement with Walter, 39, who was 428-331 in 13 seasons at George Washington and New Orleans. He was one of three finalists, along with Ed Servais, the head coach at Creighton and Mike Martin, Jr., an assistant coach at Florida State.

Walter will succeed Rick Rembielak, whose contract wasn't renewed after the Deacons finished 22-30 and last in the ACC in 2009. Rembielak was 142-142 in five seasons at Wake Forest.

The Privateers were only 22-33 in 2009, but were coming off two straight trips to the NCAA Tournament.

New Orleans finished 38-26 in 2007 and was invited to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1979. The Privateers were 43-21 in 2008 and had 10 players who had never before been drafted picked in Major League Baseball's draft.

Walter graduated from Georgetown in 1991.
