La'Mont Jackson, a recent graduate of Reynolds, has signed a track scholarship with Clemson, according to Philip Sikes of Clemson's sports-information department.
Jackson, who finished second in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles in the NCHSAA's Class 4-A outdoor track-and-field championships in May, also considered East Carolina, High Point and LSU, said Norman Traszkoma, Jackson's coach at Reynolds.
"He wanted to take all of his visits first and he was just trying to weigh all his options, and track scholarships come a little later than most," Traszkoma said.
Jackson, who is also a sprinter, holds school records in four indoor events -- the 55, 200, 300 and 400-meter sprints -- as well as the outdoor 300 hurdles and 4x400 relay. He is a two-time Nike All-American, once in the indoor 200 meters and once in the outdoor 400 hurdles.
"He only ran track for 2½ years and he has a lot of potential," Traszkoma said. "He may be a better sprinter than he is a hurdler but I thought he would attract more attention as a hurdler, and that's what happened, so Clemson is getting a great sprinter and a great hurdler. They are talking about him running on two relay teams next year, so that's how much they think of him."
