■ Warren Allen, who took over as president of the Twin City Track Club in May, says that increasing membership is one of his biggest goals.
He said that some prospective members might be intimidated by the club's name but shouldn't be.
"I think part of it is the name, and people might think that we run on the track all the time and that we are all great runners," said Allen, who started running about nine years ago to get in better shape for pickup basketball.
The TCTC has about 500 members.
When Allen started running, he preferred running alone and trained that way for two years. He said that once he joined a group of runners with similar paces, his workouts were much more enjoyable.
"I think there's an untapped market of runners who would have a good time running in groups," Allen said.
Membership in the club is $20 a year, or $45 for three years, and additional family members can join for $1 each. Members receive reduced-rate entry fees for races that the TCTC sponsors.
Runners interested in the club can try group runs at a leisurely pace starting July 14, with runners meeting at 5:45 p.m. at the Central YMCA. Anyone interested in more information can contact Angi Linville at angela.linville@wachovia.com or at 817-2573.
"We are going to start doing it on Tuesdays where folks can come out and give it a try," Allen said. "They don't have to be members of the club, but it's just a way to kind of introduce what the club has to offer."
■ A group of local mothers has coordinated the third annual Memorial Walk to Remember Children, scheduled at 9 a.m. July 25 at Winston-Salem's Miller Park.
The walk is to recognize and remember children who have died. In 2007, more than 350 people walked in honor of 91 children. Last year, the names of 35 children were added to the memorial wall.
The walk's theme is "Because we love them, we remember. Because we remember, they will never be forgotten."
Walkers can walk from a few hundred feet to two miles. More information is available at www.memorialwalktoremember.info or by calling 774-1567.
