College-Football Notebook: BC's Jagodzinski interviews with Jets

»  Comments | Post a Comment

■ Boston College's Jeff Jagodzinski met with New York Jets officials yesterday to discuss their head-coaching vacancy — an interview that was expected to cost him his job with the Eagles.

Jagodzinski, who became BC's coach in 2007, was told by Athletics Director Gene DeFilippo that he would be fired if he met with the NFL team.

ESPN.com, citing two people close to the situation, reported last night that Jagodzinski will not be retained by BC because of the meeting with New York.

■ Auburn has named veteran coach Ted Roof as defensive coordinator.

Roof, a 22-year coaching veteran and former Duke head coach, spent last season running the defense for Minnesota before joining Gene Chizik's staff yesterday. Under his leadership, Minnesota improved from last nationally in total defense to 79th in one year.

Roof also spent four seasons coaching the defense at Georgia Tech, his alma mater, among several stops.

■ Quarterback Armanti Edwards, safety Mark Legree and linebacker Jacque Roman were named first-team All-Americas yesterday by The Sports Network, joining four others from Southern Conference schools — fullback Dane Romero of Wofford, receiver Andre Roberts of The Citadel and tackle Joel Bell and cornerback William Middleton of Furman.

Second-team selections included receiver Terrell Hudgins and placekicker Andrew Wilcox of Elon and cornerback Cortez Gilbert of Appalachian, and linebackers Pierre Banks of Appalachian and Jeffrey Williams of Gardner-Webb made the third team.

■ Quarterback Russell Wilson of N.C. State won't need surgery to repair the knee he injured in the Papajohns.com Bowl against Rutgers.

School officials said yesterday that an MRI this week confirmed doctors' initial diagnosis of a sprained knee and a torn posterior-cruciate ligament.

Wilson was hurt in the second quarter, left the game and didn't return.

■ Steve Spurrier has hired Illinois' offensive-line coach to take on the same duties at South Carolina.

Spurrier said yesterday that Eric Wolford will take over for John Hunt, who was let go in November after four seasons with the Gamecocks.
Wolford, 37, was also the Illini's running-game coordinator.
Two seasons ago, Wolford's offensive line helped the Illini gain a school record 3,338 rushing yards. The line allowed only 16 sacks, also a school record.

■ Presbyterian coach Bobby Bentley has stepped down to become offensive coordinator at his old high school.

Bentley also will become athletics director and public-relations director at Spartanburg School District 5. He told his players of his decision yesterday.

Bentley went 10-13 in two seasons as the Blue Hose moved to Division I. He won four straight state titles as head coach at Byrnes High School before coming to Presbyterian.

Presbyterian has named Doug Malone, the offensive-line coach, as the interim head coach.

■ Defensive coordinator Charlie Strong of Florida thinks race is a reason that he hasn't been offered a head-coaching job during his 25 years in college football, the Orlando Sentinel reported yesterday.

Strong, a 48-year-old black man, shook his head affirmatively when a Sentinel reporter asked him if his interracial marriage was a factor in his being passed over for head-coaching jobs, including one at a school in the South a few years ago.

Strong, whose wife is white, said he heard that too many times for it to be rumor.

"Everybody always said I didn't get that job because my wife is white," Strong said Monday. "If you think about it, a coach is standing up there representing the university. If you're not strong enough to look through that (interracial marriage), then you have an issue."

There are seven black coaches at the nation's 119 major football schools, including four hired in December.

■ Defensive back Jerraud Powers has decided to forgo his senior season at Auburn and enter the NFL Draft.

Auburn athletics officials announced Powers' decision in a statement yesterday. Powers, a 5-9, 191-pounder from Decatur, said he was thankful for his years at Auburn but felt the decision was best for him and his family.

Powers, a freshman all-SEC selection in 2006, led the team with four interceptions and had 63 tackles in 2007 while starting all 13 games. This season he had 47 tackles and two interceptions while starting 10 games.
