If George Johnson knew in August what he knows today, Wake Forest's game at N.C. State tonight would be televised.
He didn't. And it will not be.
Johnson, the senior vice president of Raycom Sports, is the man most responsible for deciding which ACC basketball games will be televised. He acknowledged yesterday that given the Deacons' current No. 7 ranking, tonight's game should be part of the package that Raycom either telecasts or brokers to other networks.
"I would say it's unfortunate," Johnson said. "When we do the schedule in August, had we known at that point that Wake Forest would be a Top-10 team, you'd probably find a way to figure it out and get them on.
"But as we sit here today in February, that's something that was just not known at the time."
Johnson said that 92 of the 96 games between ACC teams will be televised this season, the most ever. But the Deacons will play two ACC games that will not be televised, the other being their home game against Georgia Tech on Feb. 18.
The other ACC games not on the TV schedule are Miami against Florida State on Jan. 21 and Miami at Georgia Tech on March 4.
"Wake has two of the four, but it certainly has nothing to do with their performance per se," Johnson said. "There are many factors that go into the television schedule."
A live telecast of tonight's game will be available on the internet at ACC Select. There is a charge of $5.95 per game for those who are not subscribers to the ACC Select Package.
