Game day
N.C. State at Arizona
• Site, time: McKale Center, Tucson, Ariz.; 10:30
• TV/radio: FSCR Ch. 46; WIFM 100.9; WSJS 600
• Of note: N.C. State (8-2) will be without forward Tracy Smith, who was suspended for one game by Coach Sidney Lowe for comments he made about the officiating after Sunday's loss at Wake Forest. That will leave the Wolfpack without its leading scorer and rebounder, and Dennis Horner (14.3 ppg, five rpg) and Javi Gonzalez (10.9 ppg, 4.6 rpg) will be asked to pick up some of the slack…. Arizona (5-5) is coming off an 83-82 OT win over Lipscomb, a game Nic Wise won with a 3-pointer with .1 seconds left. Wise (17.0 ppg) leads the Wildcats in scoring, and Derrick Williams (13.9 ppg) and Jamelle Horne (11.1 ppg) are also in double figures, and Horne (8.1 rpg) is the top rebounder…. Sean Miller, a former N.C. State assistant, is in his first season as Arizona's head coach, and brother Archie, a former Wolfpack player and assistant, is the associate head coach.
Notes
■ Junior Nikita Mescheriakov of Georgetown is transferring to another school at the end of the semester in an effort to get more playing time, Coach John Thompson III said. Mescheriakov -- at least the fifth player to leave Georgetown and transfer in the last three years -- started nine games last season, but he has played in only seven this season for a combined 44 minutes.
■ Karen Cunagin Sypher has pleaded not guilty to new charges, including retaliating against a witness, related to an alleged extortion attempt of Coach Rick Pitino of Louisville.
The new charges stem from a police report Sypher filed accusing Pitino of raping her. The FBI, Louisville police and prosecutors have said that there was no basis for her rape allegations. Sypher entered not guilty pleas in May to charges of trying to extort money from Pitino and lying to the FBI. She is accused of demanding college tuition for her children, her house to be paid off and $10 million.
