■ Victor Davila (Starmount '08) has made a big contribution to Virginia Tech's 8-1 record in men's basketball.
Davila, a 6-8 sophomore, has started all nine games for the Hokies and is third on the team in scoring (8.7 ppg), rebounding (5.8 rpg) and blocked shots (nine).
He's also shooting 50 percent from the field (31 of 62) and is tied for the team lead.
■ Rhett Bonner (North Forsyth '06) set a career high with 28 points as he helped Guilford rally from an eight-point halftime deficit for a 77-72 men's-basketball win over Hampden-Sydney last Wednesday.
Bonner hit 6 of 11 shots from 3-point range and 6 of 6 free throws and added six assists.
Gabriel Lowder (North Forsyth '06) also set a career high with 14 points for the Quakers. He went 5 for 7 from the field and scored 12 points during the second-half rally. Tyler Sanborn (Elkin '06) added 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in the win.
■ Western Carolina's Tiana Jones (High Point Central '06) finished first in the women's triple jump at the Appalachian Invitational indoor track meet Dec. 5 with a distance of 39 feet, 5¾ inches. WCU's Drew Tucker (West Stokes '07) won the men's 800 meters (1:57.57), and Appalachian State's Hannah Parks (Glenn '05) won the women's 3,000 meters (10:52.88).
Also in turning in top-five finishes were: Appalachian's John Svoboda (East Forsyth '05) in the men's 200 (2nd, 22.30 seconds) and 400 (5th, 49.82); King College's Amanda Davis (West Wilkes '06) in the women's 400 (2nd, 57.88); Appalachian's Julie Ward (Watauga '06) in the pole vault (3rd, 3.35 meters); and Appalachian's Landon Powell (North Davidson '09) in the men's 55 meters (4th, 6.37) and 200 (4th, 22.56).
■ Matt Cline (Glenn '06) finished his junior season at Appalachian State with more than 1,000 all-purpose yards. He caught a team-high 85 passes for 981 yards and added 50 yards rushing and 7 yards on kick returns.
Cline had seven catches for 101 yards in ASU's 24-17 loss to Montana in Saturday's FCS seminal.
