Brooke Thomas made two free throws with four seconds left to help Wake Forest hold off North Florida 60-57 yesterday in a nonconference women's basketball game at Joel Coliseum.
The game, which started at 11:30 a.m., was Wake Forest's annual "School Day" game and drew a crowd of 3,492, many of whom came with school groups.
Wake Forest led 58-55 when Thomas was fouled with 11 seconds left, but she missed two free throws. North Florida's Brittany Kirkland hit a jumper with five seconds left to cut the Deacons' lead to one.
Wake Forest then inbounded the ball to Thomas, who was immediately fouled. This time, she hit both free throws, and the Deacons won after Kirkland's desperation 3-point shot at the buzzer missed. Kirkland led all scorers with 23 points.
Brittany Waters had a team-high 14 points for Wake Forest (7-2). Secily Ray added a game-high 11 rebounds and 10 points, and freshman Asia Williams played 19 minutes and had six steals for the Deacons.
An opening 4-for-4 performance from 3-point range helped the Deacons build a 14-5 lead in the first four minutes.
Kirkland scored six points during a 9-3 run by the Ospreys over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to three points.
Wake Forest never trailed, but North Florida (1-7) kept it close all the way to the finish.
Wake Forest's next game will be at South Carolina on Thursday night at 7.
