Soccer Notebook: Senior Lichtfuss says Deacons have adapted

»  Comments | Post a Comment

■ Defender Justin Lichtfuss, Wake Forest's only fifth-year senior, is having his best season and is seeing plenty of playing time because of his consistency on defense.

Lichtfuss acknowledges that there are differences between this season's team and last season's, saying: "We don't score as many goals … but we still put up pretty good numbers, and defensively we have to be sharper."

The Deacons lost eight starters after reaching the national semifnals of the NCAA Tournament but are back in the final four.

"It's a tribute to the coaching staff and all the players that have come through," Lichtfuss said.

■ Virginia has a Wake Forest connection on its sideline -- Mike McGinty, the associate head coach, was a starting goalkeeper for the Deacons in the 1990s. After college, he played professionally for eight years, ending his career with D.C. United in 2002. He became a Virginia assistant in 2003 and was promoted to associate head coach before this season.
