In Motion: Mistletoe runners show up in force in spite of weather

Despite cold and rainy weather, Saturday's Mistletoe Half-Marathon drew nearly 900 runners, the most in the race's 26-year history, according to race director Beth Hair. Nearly 1,000 runners had registered.

"We didn't know what would happen with the forecast for rain, but we were thrilled with the turnout," Hair said.

Molly Nunn, 26, of Winston-Salem had the top finish for the women with a time of 1:20.55, with Vivina Chalco-Caiza, 29, of High Point second (1:25:28) and Loring Crowley, 26, of Winston-Salem, third (1:28.32).

The men's winner was Garick Hill, 28, of Winston-Salem (1:11.35), with Scott Morgan, 16, of Clemmons second (1:13.08) and Ulf Andre, 42, of Hillsborough, third (1:16.14).

One popular feature of the Mistletoe is the companion 5-K race, which drew nearly 1,300 runners, including many grade-school and middle-school girls from the "Girls on the Run" program. Several ran their first 5-Ks.

The top three women were all from Winston-Salem, with Erin Redden, 22, first (20:19), Erin Anderson, 25, second (20:30) and Sarah Clawson, 28, third (21:26). Justin Pfruender, 29, of Winston-Salem was the top finisher for the men (16:46), ahead of Jason Midkiff, 18, of Kernersville (17:02) and Aaron Bowman, 34, of Greensboro (17:24).

Bill Gibbs of Winston-Salem set the state record for a 50-year-old in a marathon with a time of 2:53.50 at the Outer Banks Marathon last month.

Gibbs, a member of the Twin City Track Club, was one of about 25 TCTC members who ran.

Twelve Twin City Track Club runners will try to regain a Guinness World Record on Dec. 19 at the William White YMCA (formerly the Central YMCA) in Winston-Salem.

The challenge for the 12-man team will be to run 100 miles on a treadmill in less than 9 hours, 5 minutes and 17 seconds. That's the time posted recently by a team from England, which surpassed the record set by a TCTC team in August 2008.

Expected to run are: Garick Hill, Kevin Hill, Nate Ayers, Alan Marion, Kyle Armentrout, Jack Anderson, Reese Wells, John Anderson, Mark Uren, Tim Doran, Bill Gibbs and James Banner.

The Run To Victory Half Marathon and 5-mile run/walk to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp will be Saturday in Randleman.
