College-Football Notebook: Baker is winner of Piccolo Award

»  Comments | Post a Comment

■ Running back Toney Baker of N.C. State has won the Brian Piccolo Award, given annually to the ACC's "most courageous" football player.

A serious knee injury in the 2007 opener required two surgeries and kept Baker off the field until this year. He returned to lead the Wolfpack with 773 yards rushing, and has 2,045 career yards rushing.

Coach Tom O'Brien said that Baker "has shown true courage in the face of adversity."

The award is named for Piccolo, who was the ACC's athlete of the year at Wake Forest in 1965 and played for the Chicago Bears before learning he had cancer.

■ Officials in Athens, Ga., said that Montez Robinson, a freshman defensive end for the Bulldogs, has been jailed on charges involving altercations with a female student.

University police Lt. Eric Dellinger said yesterday that Robinson, 19, , was being held at the Athens-Clarke County jail after being charged with misdemeanor simple battery and felony criminal damage. Robinson was granted bail of $2,000 at a magistrate court's hearing yesterday but had not posted bond, and the magistrate's office said he did not have an attorney at his hearing.

Robinson was charged with underage possession of alcohol Monday. He is charged with assaulting the student Oct. 20 and criminal damage for an allegation that he broke taillights on her car Monday.

■ A campus altercation involving Michigan State football players and fraternity members could affect the Spartans' bowl destination.

Alamo Bowl officials say they are monitoring the fallout from the Nov. 22 incident that led to the suspension of 10 players. No charges have been filed, but police are still investigating.

Rick Hill, the Alamo Bowl's vice president of marketing, said yesterday the incident is one of several factors that will be discussed before bowl selections are announced Sunday.

■ Auburn has been disciplined for secondary NCAA rules violations during its highly publicized "Big Cat Weekend" last May.

The Tigers were temporarily barred from contacting six recruits who participated in the event. Assistant coach Trooper Taylor was banned from off-campus recruiting until the end of last month, and five other coaches who participated got reprimands.

Auburn announced the penalties Thursday night in response to open-records requests from media outlets

The recruits participated in the school tradition of rolling Toomer's Corner with toilet paper. They were introduced to the crowd and members of the media were on hand, both of which are NCAA violations.

■ Police investigating the stabbing death of Connecticut's Jasper Howard have arrested two more people.

UConn police on Thursday charged 22-year-old Rahim Muhammad, of Bloomfield, with hindering prosecution, tampering with evidence and interfering with police. Police say he moved or concealed evidence but would not elaborate. Hadiyah Vanover, 22, of Windsor, was charged with tampering with a witness and interfering with police after it was alleged that he tried to coerce at least one witness into not cooperating.

Eight people have been arrested in connection with the Oct. 18 stabbing.

■ The Notre Dame football season is officially over.

Athletics director Jack Swarbrick announced yesterday that the school has decided against going to a bowl game with a 6-6 record, citing "unique circumstances" surrounding the program.

One of those circumstances is that it has no head coach. Swarbrick earlier this week fired Charlie Weis as coach after five seasons. The search for a replacement is under way.

The Irish finished the season with four straight losses to finish at .500 for just the sixth time in 121 seasons. The last time was in 2004 when Tyrone Willingham was fired as coach.
