P.J. Clyburn, a 6-1, 205-pound linebacker from Statesville, committed to North Carolina and is part of the 2010 recruiting class.
"I'm just excited; words don't speak as to how happy I am," Clyburn said. "It's been my dream school growing up to play at Carolina. I'm ready to look forward to the future."
Clyburn made his decision yesterday after meeting with Coach Butch Davis of UNC.
According to internet reports, one other player has joined the UNC class and another has left.
Darius Lipford, a 6-2, 200-pound safety from Lenoir, has switched his commitment to UNC from Duke. Coach Chuck Cannon of Hibriten did not return a message left by the Journal to discuss Lipford's move.
Reggie Wilkins, a 5-10, 160-pound receiver prospect from Shelby, has withdrawn his commitment. He is still considering UNC, according to reports, but is also looking at N.C. State. Coach Roy Kirby of Crest did not immediately return messages yesterday to discuss Wilkins' change in thinking.
The movement leaves UNC with 14 commitments. The players can sign the binding national letter of intent in February.
Clyburn was also offered scholarships by N.C. State, East Carolina, Arkansas, Illinois and Kentucky. He had 65 tackles and one interception this season. Clyburn averaged 39 yards on kickoff returns this season. Teams kicked the ball away from him, according to Coach Mark Weycker of West Iredell, but he had four returns for touchdowns and a fifth was called back.
"He might well be the best football player we've ever had come through here," Weycker said. "And we've had some good ones."
Lipford was ranked by SuperPrep the No. 26 senior in the state in the preseason. He committed to Duke in October 2008.
Wilkins was ranked the No. 31 senior in the state in the preseason by SuperPrep. He spent most of his high-school career playing quarterback.
