Jill Hutchinson scored her fourth goal of the season in the 65th minute to lift Wake Forest to a 2-1 victory over Loyola (Md.) yesterday at Spry Stadium.
With the game tied at one, Kaley Fountain and Hutchinson combined for the game-winning goal. Fountain played a cross from near the end line on the left side. Her pass found Hutchinson inside the 18, and she sent the ball into the upper left-hand side of the net.
The Deacons' defense did a stellar job of preventing Loyola (2-1) from having any quality chances in the second half. The Greyhounds attempted one shot in the second 45 minutes. Wake Forest (4-0) was forced to play a player down for the final nine minutes after Fountain received a red card, but Loyola could not take advantage of the situation, failing to get a shot off during that stretch.
Wake Forest outshot Loyola 12-2. The Deacons had five shots on goal compared to one for the Greyhounds. Wake Forest had seven corner kicks, Loyola two.
Hutchinson has scored the game-winner in each of Wake Forest's last two games. After not scoring in the first game, Hutchinson has had at least one goal in the Deacons' last three.
Senior goalkeeper Laura Morse earned the victory to improve to 4-0 on the season. Morse allowed one goal and did not make a save in 90 minutes. Brittany Henderson suffered the loss for Loyola, making three saves and giving up two goals.
Wake Forest grabbed the early lead on the first collegiate goal by freshman Lindsey Holman-Kelley in the 10th minute.
A foul on Loyola gave Holman-Kelley a free kick from the right side of the field, just outside the 18. Holman-Kelley's kick from a tough angle went over the keeper and curled into the left side of the net to put Wake Forest in front 1-0.
Loyola tied the score in the 14th minute. Kelly Thomas played a nice ball off a corner kick inside the 6-yard box. The Deacons attempted to clear, but were unsuccessful and Tessa McClenahan was able to get a shot off from inside the 6-yard box.
McClenahan's shot hit off the bottom of the cross bar and went into the goal for her second goal of the season.
