Salem fended off a late rally to defeat Winston-Salem 8-5 last night. Winston-Salem lost its fourth straight, but still has a half-game lead over Salem for first place in the Southern Division.

The Dash, trailing 8-3 going into the ninth, started hitting against reliever Chad Povich. Joe Persichina, who finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, hit a one-out double and scored when Dale Mollenhauer hit a two-run homer. Tyler Kuhn and Greg Paiml singled and pinch-hitter C.J. Lang walked to load the bases with one out. The Red Sox turned to the bullpen, bringing in Jason Blackey. Blackey struck out Seth Loman and Justin Greene to end the game. Blackey got his fourth save.

The Dash manufactured a run with a two-out rally against Eammon Portice in the first inning. Paiml walked with two outs and stole second. Brent Morel delivered an RBI single to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead.

The Red Sox answered back in the bottom of the inning on Tim Federowicz's acrifice fly that tied the score 1-1.

The Dash took the lead again in the top of the second when Persichina scored John Curtis from second with an RBI single.

The Red Sox countered with a two-out rally that produced three runs off Miguel Socolovich in the bottom of the third. Brad Correll, Anthony Rizzo and Chiang connected on consecutive run-scoring hits to give the Red Sox a 4-2 lead.

Socolovich (3-3), a regular out of the bullpen making just his third start of the season, lasted three innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits.

Salem poured it on against the Winston-Salem bullpen with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Dash and Red Sox are scheduled to conclude the four-game series tonight.
