Red Sox rally in 8th inning to slip past Dash 4-3

Salem used a three-run eighth inning to rally past Winston-Salem 4-3 last night at Lewis-Gale Field.

Luis Segovia, who finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs, broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out, two-run double off Charlis Burdie in the bottom of the eighth to help the Red Sox take the second game of the series.

The Dash, down 4-2 entering the ninth, attempted a rally of its own when Justin Greene and Logan Johnson started the inning with consecutive singles off Kyle Fernandes to put runners on the corners with no outs.

For the second consecutive night, Salem brought Robert Coello in from the bullpen. Coello struck out Sergio Morales, then gave up an RBI infield single to Joe Persichina that cut the lead to 4-3. But Coello struck out Dale Mollenhauer and retired Tyler Kuhn on a fly ball to left to preserve the win and get his second save of the season.

Fernandes (5-3) pitched two innings of relief and was charged with a run on three hits. Burdie (2-1) allowed three runs in two innings of relief.

The Dash snapped its streak of 19 consecutive scoreless innings with two runs off Dave McKae in the top of the second. Morales reached second with two outs when he hit into a fielder's choice and advanced on a throwing error, one of three Salem errors in the game. Persichina, who went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, followed with a run-scoring double and Mollenhauer had an RBI single to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.

Salem trimmed the deficit in half in the fourth when Zach Borowiak doubled with one out and scored on Segovia's RBI double. Starting pitcher Justin Edwards of the Dash scattered eight hits and held the Red Sox to one run in six innings. He left with a 2-1 lead, but didn't figure in the decision.

The Red Sox's eighth-inning rally began when Burdie walked Brad Correll to lead off and Anthony Rizzo followed with a single. After David Mailman popped out on a failed sacrifice-bunt attempt, pinch-hitter Chih-Hsien Chiang walked to load the bases. Will Vazquez tied the game at 2 with an RBI groundout and Segovia followed with the game-winning double.

The Dash will start Miguel Socolovich (3-2, 3.40) tonight and the Red Sox will start Eammon Portice (6-7, 4.69). The game will start at 7:05 p.m.
