The offensive woes of the Winston-Salem Dash continued last night.
Kevin Weiland pitched six shutout innings and the Salem Red Sox beat the Dash 7-0 at Lewis-Gale Field in the opener of a four-game Carolina League series.
It was the second consecutive shutout for the Dash, which lost the second game of a doubleheader to the Lynchburg Hillcats 6-0 on Sunday.
The Dash, which struck out a season-high 15 times against the Red Sox, have not scored in the last 18 innings.
Weiland (6-9) struck out a career high 10 batters and allowed two hits.
The Red Sox scored twice in the fourth inning against starter Anthony Carter. Mike Jones reached second with one out when his grounder deflected off the glove of first baseman Seth Loman for a double. Brad Correll followed with a two-run homer. It was the 17th home run allowed by Carter, tops in the Carolina League.
Salem scored five more runs in the seventh inning. Chih-Hsien Chaing reached on a leadoff walk by reliever Ryan Rote and moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt.
One out later, Zach Borowaik's RBI single made the score 3-0. Che-Hsuan Lin walked and Aaron Reza reached on another error by the Dash to load the bases.
Rote uncorked back-to-back wild pitches as the Red Sox took a 5-0 lead, and Anthony Rizzo and Tim Federowicz each added run-scoring singles.
Armando Zerpa worked two perfect innings for the Red Sox and Robert Coello recorded the final two outs. Carter (11-7) went five innings for the Dash. He gave up two runs on six hits.
The two teams will continue their series tonight. Justin Edwards (5-1, 4.26 ERA) will start for the Dash and Dave McKae (2-6, 4.93) for the Red Sox.
The Dash will be back home on Friday night to take on the Lynchburg Hillcats in a 7 p.m. start.
