Loman HR helps Dash split with Hillcats

Seth Loman hit a three-run home run to lift the Winston-Salem Dash over the Lynchburg Hillcats 6-3 in the opener as the teams split a doubleheader yesterday at City Stadium.

Matt McSwain pitched a complete-game shutout in the Hillcats' 6-0 victory in the nightcap.

Lynchburg scored twice in the first inning of the opener. Chase d'Arnaud led off with a double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Jorday Mercer's single. Mercer stole second and scored on Matt Hague's single.

Starter Dylan Axelrod (2-1) of the Dash kept the Hillcats scoreless his final five innings. He allowed two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in six innings.

The Dash tied the scored with a two-out rally in the fourth. Loman was hit by a pitch and Greg Paiml followed with a double. Tyler Kuhn's single drove in both to tie the score at 2.

Winston-Salem took control in the fifth inning. C.J. Lang led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Dale Mollenhauer singled home Lang. One out later, Brent Morel singled to put runners on first and third and Loman followed with his 11th home run to give the Dash a 6-2 lead.

It was the first time that Winston-Salem has scored more than five runs in a game since July 28.

McSwain was dominant in the nightcap. He struck out six and did not allow a walk in earning his 10th win.

The Hillcats scored all the runs they needed in the first inning. Mercer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Kris Watts added an RBI- single to give Lynchburg a 2-0 lead.

Mercer's two-run homer in the third increased the Hillcats' lead to 4-0.

Winston-Salem will continue its eight-game, seven-day road trip when its opens a four-game series against Salem tonight. Anthony Carter (11-6, 4.16) will start for the Dash and Kyle Weiland (5-9, 3.67) for the Red Sox.

The Dash will return to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Friday night for a series against the Hillcats.
