LYNCHBURG, Va.
The Winston-Salem Dash's struggles at the plate continued last night as the Lynchburg Hillcats took a 5-1 victory at City Stadium.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed by lightning. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday at 5 p.m.
It was the seventh time in the last 12 games that Winston-Salem has scored one run or less.
The Dash scored its only run against Jeff Locke in the top of the third inning. Dale Mollenhauer lined a one-out double and stole third base. Greg Paiml followed with an RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg threatened in the bottom of the inning after Alex Presley and Jose De Los Santos led off with consecutive singles against Winston-Salem starting pitcher Miguel Socolovich. Chase d'Arnaud followed, and with a 1-2 count, a heavy downpour caused a 49-minute rain delay. After play resumed, d'Arnaud lined the first pitch from Socolovich into center field for an RBI single that tied the score. On the next pitch, Josh Harrison lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to put the Hillcats in front 2-1.
Harrison, who finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs, came through with another big hit in the fourth inning when he delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single that scored a two runs and gave Lynchburg a 4-1 lead. Socolovich (3-2), who was making his second start of the season, was lifted from the game following the hit as he gave up four runs on seven hits in 32/3 innings.
The Hillcats tacked on a run in the fifth inning after Kent Sakamoto registered a two-out, RBI single off Nate Jones. The run support was more than enough for Locke (4-8), who lasted five innings and held the Dash to one run on four hits to get his fourth win in his 24th start.
The Dash and Hillcats are scheduled to play the second game of the four-game series tonight at 6:05. Winston-Salem will start right-hander Jacob Rasner (3-5, 4.49 ERA), and Lynchburg will start left-hander Justin Wilson (6-7, 4.50).
