■ Quarterback Armanti Edwards of Appalachian State had the stitches removed from his right foot yesterday morning, 12 days after injuring the foot in a lawn-mowing accident at his off-campus residence.
Edwards hopes to be in the starting lineup for Appalachian's opener against East Carolina on Sept. 5.
Edwards enters his senior season as ASU's all-time leader in total offense (10,783 yards), touchdown passes (62) and touchdowns responsible for (109).
■ Redshirt freshman Kyle Parker will be the starting quarterback when Clemson opens the season against Middle Tennessee next month.
Coach Dabo Swinney of Clemson selected Parker as the starter after yesterday's practice. But Swinney said that redshirt sophomore Willy Korn will play in every game this year. Parker and Korn have battled for the starting slot since spring practice.
Swinney said he thinks either quarterback can lead the Tigers to victory. But he said that naming Parker as the starter will give the team time to solidify.
Parker has not played in a football game for Clemson, although the outfielder is two-year starter on the baseball team.
Korn has played in eight games and is 34 of 49 passing for 316 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for two touchdowns.
■ Miami defensive end Adewale Ojomo could miss the Hurricanes' Sept. 7 season-opener at Florida State with an undisclosed injury.
Ojomo got hurt "horsing around in the locker room with a couple of players" Sunday, according to Coach Randy Shannon. There's no definitive timetable on his return, and it's possible that Ojomo still could be ready for the opener.
Ojomo played in 11 games last season as a redshirt freshman, making three starts.
Two freshmen, linebacker Shayon Green and offensive lineman Cory White, both are "out for a while," Shannon said, again not offering specifics.
The team typically does not release injury information other than saying when a player has undergone surgery.
■ Syracuse has agreed to play three home games against Notre Dame and Southern California during the next seven years in the new stadium at the Meadowlands.
Two people with knowledge of the agreement, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official announcement has not been made, said that the Orange will face Southern California in 2012 and Notre Dame in 2014 and 2016.
The new privately owned $1.6 billion stadium is being built by the Giants and the Jets of the NFL. It is scheduled to open next season.
■ Johnny DuRocher, a former Washington quarterback trying to make a football comeback, has left the program at Division II Central Washington.
School spokesman Jonathan Gordon said that DuRocher left for undisclosed reasons.
DuRocher played in two games for the Huskies in 2006, and suffered a concussion in one game. A CAT scan after the concussion revealed a benign brain tumor, which DuRocher had surgery to remove.
